Chapter 103 Public Accusation
Quinn stepped slightly in front of Lucy, shielding her.

“I think you’ve got the wrong idea,” she said. “Yes, I know Harold, but the reason we’ve met is work related.”
A woman scoffed.
“You’re young and pretty. You could do anything. Why choose to wreck someone’s marriage?”
“Exactly,” another voice chimed in. “Women like you would’ve been run out of town a hundred years ago.”
“For money, people like her will do anything. No shame at all.”
Voices piled on from every direction. Quinn forced down the anger boiling inside her.
“Call Harold down here,” she said. “We can clear this up face to face.”
“Clear it up?” Ethan snapped while holding his mother’s arm. “You probably rehearsed your story already.”
He looked like he wanted to swing at her.
But the way he had been raised held him back.
Even his mother, standing face to face with the woman she believed was a mistress, could not bring herself to slap someone or pull hair like some kind of public brawl.
Honestly, Quinn was getting off easy.
Quinn took a slow breath and pulled out her phone, planning to call Harold. Suddenly someone reached out from the crowd and slapped the phone out of her hand.
The phone hit the floor.
“Why be polite with a homewrecker?”
“Yeah, people like her have no shame.”
“Where were her parents when she was growing up? If she were my daughter, I’d have disowned her.”
“What a disgrace to her family.”
Lucy was shaking with anger.
She stepped forward and shouted at the crowd.
“What are you people even talking about? You don’t know anything and you’re already talking nonsense! She’s being framed! That guy is in his fifties. A middle-aged man. We wouldn’t even look twice!”
But Lucy’s defense did nothing.
People loved gossip.

And the word “mistress” carried a kind of instant hatred.
Once that label stuck, explanations sounded weak and pointless. Lucy bent down to grab Quinn’s phone.
But in the chaos someone had stepped on it.
The screen had already gone dark.
“This is unbelievable!” Lucy shouted. “We’re calling the police!”
There was no way Quinn would fall for Julian, let alone some middle-aged man and become his mistress.
Besides, Lucy knew the truth. Quinn had known Harold less than a week.
Veronica had introduced them.
“That’s rich,” Ethan said with a laugh full of anger. “You want to call the police? Being a mistress is something you’re proud of? You want the whole city to know?”
“Ethan.” A man’s voice suddenly came from behind the crowd.
Ethan turned and immediately called out.
“Dad!”
Harold stepped out of the elevator. He glanced around at the gathering crowd.
“What’s going on here?”
“What’s going on?” Lydia spoke before anyone else could. “You really have the nerve to ask? Harold, I never thought that at your age you’d betray me like this.”
“What are you talking about?” Harold walked over and tried to support her. “How could I ever betray you?”
Lydia shook him off.
“Don’t touch me! She’s your mistress. How long were you planning to keep lying to me?”
“That’s impossible.” Harold looked at Quinn. “There must be some misunderstanding. Miss Lane and I are not what you think.”
“You’re still lying.” Lydia’s eyes were red. “After everything we’ve been through, you’re still lying to me.”
She suddenly pointed at Quinn.
“The fact that she’s standing here says everything! How long do you think you can keep deceiving me?”
Quinn finally spoke, “Mrs. Whitman, I believe you’re mistaken. Harold and I only met about a week ago.”
“Only a week and you’re already sleeping with my father?” Ethan shouted. “How low can you go!”
After saying that, he turned to Harold with reddened eyes. “Dad, I’m really disappointed in you.”

Someone in the crowd raised a phone.
“Why argue with a mistress? I’m posting her online right now so everyone can see what this shameless woman looks like.”
Another person added, “Are mistresses this bold now? Look at what she’s done to the wife.”
Lucy raised her voice. “Harold, say something!”
Harold quickly looked at Quinn. “Miss Lane, maybe you should head out first. I’ll take care of the rest.
Quinn stared at him in disbelief.
“If I leave, what does that make me? This needs to be cleared up.”
Lucy nodded fiercely. “Exactly! You can’t just throw accusations at people! Tell them already. Quinn and you are not that kind of relationship.”
“It’s.,. complicated,” Harold said quietly. “Just go home first. Listen to me.”
His eyes carried a pleading look. “I’ll contact you later.”
But his vague attitude only made the situation worse.
It sounded like confirmation that something inappropriate existed between them.
Ethan exploded. “Dad! At a time like this you’re still protecting her!”
“Be quiet!” Harold snapped. “Do you want to push your mother over the edge?”
“You still care about Mom?” Ethan shot back. “If you really cared, you wouldn’t have a mistress!”
