Chapter 108 A Plan Backfires
In plenty of marriages within high society, couples simply stayed together out of convenience.

Some even lived completely separate lives while maintaining the appearance of a normal relationship.
Julian had never intended to involve himself in Harold’s private matters.
But Harold had made a serious mistake tonight.
He dragged Quinn into it. At that point, Julian had no reason to stay out of it.
“I worked with him once before,” Julian said casually. “So I know a little about him.”
Of course, that wasn’t the real story. Julian had
I no intention of telling Quinn the truth.
He didn’t want her feeling pressured or indebted.
In reality, a company like Whitman Media would never have the chance to collaborate with him.
Lucy accepted the explanation immediately without questioning it.
Quinn did too. In the back seat, Quinn slowly adjusted her breathing and tried to calm herself down.
After a moment, she finally spoke, “Mr. Sterling, thank you so much for helping me tonight. If you hadn’t shown up when you did, I honestly don’t know how I could have proven I was innocent.”
Lucy nodded vigorously. “Seriously. Harold was unbelievable tonight. How could he do something like that? Doesn’t he realize rumors like that can ruin someone’s reputation?”
Julian spoke calmly, “You handled things well today. At least you knew to call me when you needed help.”
Lucy grinned immediately. “I did pretty great, right? So what kind of reward are we talking about?”
Julian glanced at her briefly. “What do you want?”
Lucy’s eyes curved with mischief.
“You’re the best. So… how about one of those pieces from your jewelry collection?”
Julian looked at her.
Just one look. Lucy immediately shrank back into her seat.
“I’m kidding,” she said quickly with an awkward laugh. “Totally kidding.”
Julian didn’t respond. Instead, his eyes moved to the rearview mirror.
Quinn sat quietly in the back seat, gazing out the window at the passing city lights. Her expression looked distant. Like her mind had drifted somewhere else entirely.
Julian didn’t interrupt her.

Lucy spoke again after a moment.
“Seriously though, if you hadn’t shown up tonight, Quinn and I would have been furious with no way to fix anything.”
Situations like that were almost impossible to prove.
Especially when Harold’s accusations had been phrased in such a vague, suggestive way that people could easily jump to the wrong conclusion.
If Julian hadn’t arrived when he did, that ugly rumor might have stuck to Quinn forever.
Just thinking about it made Lucy sick.
Right then, Quinn’s phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at the screen. An unfamiliar number.
Without hesitation, she declined the call.
The last time she answered a strange number, Ethan had yelled at her over the phone. The memory still made her uneasy.
Back inside the hotel, Chase returned a phone to one of the staff members.
His expression was tense.
He had just called Charles to explain that Quinn’s alleged affair had been a misunderstanding.
Charles looked into it personally. And confirmed it really had been a misunderstanding.
Now Chase found himself hesitating again about the divorce. He couldn’t reach Quinn, so he tried calling Rosalie instead.
Rosalie had been waiting for that call. More precisely, she had been waiting for good news.
When she first heard the rumor that Quinn had cheated, she immediately started thinking about how to make the story spread as widely as possible.
Victor and Elaine didn’t have a large social circle. Most of their connections came from Victor’s colleagues at the university.
Rosalie had gone through considerable effort to figure out who Quinn’s supposed affair partner was.
Then she contacted Lydia. That was why Lydia showed up at the exact moment Ethan confronted Quinn earlier.
According to Rosalie’s plan, Victor and Elaine would also arrive around the same time with several professors from the university.
They would witness the entire scene themselves.

Quinn being exposed as someone’s mistress. Caught in the middle of a scandal.
Once that happened, the news would spread quickly through their academic circles.
Quinn’s reputation would be destroyed.
As for the embarrassment it might cause Victor and Elaine, Rosalie simply didn’t care anymore.
Besides, everyone already knew Quinn was adopted.
If Quinn became infamous, it would only make Rosalie and her biological family look even more respectable by comparison.
To Rosalie, the benefits far outweighed the cost. But Chase called with unexpected news.
There had been a traffic accident on the highway leading to the hotel.
They had been stuck in gridlock for over half an hour.
Not only did they miss the confrontation entirely, the situation had already been resolved.

Harold had apologized publicly to Quinn. Instead of being humiliated, Quinn had walked away with her name cleared.
Rosalie clenched her teeth so hard her jaw hurt.
All the careful planning she had put into this had collapsed in an instant.
The truth was, she knew Quinn would never cheat.
But when someone was already vulnerable, it was the perfect moment to deliver a crushing blow.
Rosalie had hoped tonight would destroy Quinn completely. Instead, the plan failed miserably.
How could she not be furious?
“So if she didn’t cheat,” Chase asked hesitantly, “should I still go through with the divorce?”
“She already filed a lawsuit against me. What am I supposed to do now?”
Rosalie was so angry she could barely form words.
Chase kept talking, “Rosalie, are you coming home for New Year’s Eve? If you’re not, maybe I could fly over and visit you.”
“Don’t come!” Rosalie blurted out immediately.
Then she quickly added, “I mean… I’m planning to come back.”
Chase sounded delighted. “Really?”
Yes.

Rosalie had already made up her mind. Over the past few days, she had noticed something troubling. Julian’s attitude toward her had cooled compared to before.
She could understand why. A man with Julian’s power and status would never lack women interested in him.
