Even just standing there listening to Julian speak made Quinn feel uneasy.
There was something about his calm, controlled tone that carried an unmistakable pressure.
Jess, however, had no such problem.

“Hold on,” she said, crossing her arms. “Don’t you think you’re being a little strict? She’s not a teenager. People come out, grab drinks, enjoy the night. That’s normal.”
Lucy immediately nodded like her life depended on it.
“Exactly! I only come out once in a while. I was just about to head home anyway.”
She grabbed Quinn’s hand and tried to slip away.
Jess quickly caught Quinn’s other arm.
“Wait a second,” she said with a laugh. “We just met. The night’s barely started. You’re leaving already?”
Lucy hesitated.
She looked at Julian carefully. “Julian…”
Julian stood there with that same calm, unreadable expression. “You still want to stay?”
Lucy immediately lifted one finger. “Just one hour,” she said quickly. “I promise I’ll go straight home after.”
Julian nodded once. “Fine.”
Then his gaze shifted to Quinn. “I’ll take you home.”
Quinn blinked in surprise.
Lucy blinked too. “Julian?”
Julian frowned slightly. “You just got over a cold,” he said. “And you’re already staying out this late?”
Jess watched the exchange with growing interest.
Lucy suddenly slapped her forehead. “Oh right, I forgot about that. Okay, never mind. We’ll head home.”
Jess laughed lightly. “Alright, I won’t stop you. We’ll hang out another night.”
She started walking away. After a few steps, she turned back, blew them a playful kiss, and disappeared into the crowd.
Julian was about to say something when another voice interrupted.
“Well, that was fast.”
Zeke walked over. “Come upstairs for a bit,” he said. “Everyone’s up there.”

Then he waved at the girls. “Hey.”
Lucy waved back. “Hey!”
Quinn gave a polite nod. Julian shook his head. “Not tonight. I’m taking them home.”

“That’s not happening,” Zeke replied immediately. “It’s Dylan’s birthday. You skipped the dinner earlier. Now that you’re here, you at least have to show your face.”
Before Julian could respond, Zeke casually draped an arm over Lucy’s shoulders and started guiding her toward the stairs.
“Besides, Lucy hardly ever shows up to places like this.”
Lucy looked helpless. “Fine, fine. We’ll just say hello and leave.”
“Deal.”
The two of them headed toward the stairs.
Julian knew exactly what Zeke was doing. He was giving them space. But Julian’s only concern was Quinn.

She had not seen the man at all. The sudden pull sent her stumbling backward.
She fell straight into Julian’s chest. The drunk man lurched toward them.
Julian wrapped an arm around Quinn’s waist and pivoted quickly, turning them out of the man’s path.
The movement pulled Quinn completely against him. For a brief moment, she was practically in his arms.
As soon as the danger passed, Julian released her and stepped back.
The bar smelled like alcohol and cigarette smoke. But during that brief second, Quinn had noticed something different.
A faint, cool scent.
It cut through the heavy smell around them.
Only then did Quinn fully realize what had happened. Julian had just held her.
When she looked up again, he had already stepped back to a comfortable distance. A distance that felt safe.
If he had not reacted so quickly, she might have been knocked over.
Once again, he had helped her. “Thank you,” Quinn said softly.
Julian’s expression remained calm.
“Watch where you’re going,” he said. “Let’s move.”
This time Quinn kept her attention on the path ahead.
Julian followed behind her, subtly shielding her from the crowd as they made their way upstairs.
At the top of the staircase, Dylan and several others were already waiting.
They greeted Julian enthusiastically.
Julian acknowledged them with a brief nod. He did not introduce Quinn.
