Zeke had always been the type who loved a lively night out. If there was an excuse to gather people, he would make one, and tonight was no exception. After everyone settled into the lounge at the private club, he immediately started calling a few trends over, already planning a New Year’s Eve party.

They were halfway through the discussion when Julian suddenly spoke.

“When the time comes,” he said calmly, swirling the whiskey in his glass, “invite Lucy too.”

Zeke looked up. “Lucy? Sure. The more people the better. She’ll make the night more fun.”

After they finished working out the details, Zeke leaned back into the couch beside Julian and glanced sideways at him.

“So,” he said with a grin, “how’s it going with her? Am I allowed to ask?”

Julian looked at him.

Zeke instantly raised both hands in surrender. “Alright, alright. Forget it. I won’t ask.”

Julian slowly rotated the glass in his hand. The ice shifted through the amber whiskey, catching the light as it moved.

After a moment, he said quietly, “There hasn’t been any progress.”

“I know,” Zeke replied. “You’re worried about her reputation. As long as she’s still married, you’re not going to cross any lines.”

Julian shook his head slightly. “That’s not it. Whether she’s divorced or not has nothing to do with it.”

He paused. “She just doesn’t like me.”

Zeke stared at him.

For a few seconds he looked completely speechless. Then he finally processed what he had heard.

“She doesn’t like you? How are you so sure?”

His first instinct was that Julian simply didn’t understand women. After all, Julian had almost no dating experience.

“You probably don’t understand how women think,” Zeke continued, waving his hand as if explaining something obvious. “Women are complicated. Sometimes when they say no, they actually mean yes. Sometimes when they say they’re not interested, it just means they want you to chase them.”

Julian frowned slightly. “Is that really a thing?”

Zeke laughed. “You see? That’s where you’re inexperienced. Trust me, when it comes to understanding women, I’ve spent years studying the subject.”

Julian shook his head again. “But she’s different.”

“What’s different about her?” Zeke leaned forward, suddenly curious. “Tell me what happened. I’ll analyze it for you.”

Julian lowered his gaze to the glass in his hand.

“She doesn’t want to see me again,” he said. “That’s why she moved out of Lucy’s place.”

Zeke nearly choked. “Are you serious?”

Julian glanced at him. “So what’s your analysis?”

Zeke lifted his glass and clinked it against Julian’s. “My analysis is this,” he said. “Buddy, I’m sorry.”

Julian frowned.

“I thought maybe she was playing hard to get,” Zeke continued. “You know, the kind of thing where a woman pulls away just enough to make you chase her. But this? She packed up and left. That’s not flirting. That’s shutting the door and locking it behind her.”

Julian knew Zeke’s explanation wasn’t entirely accurate.

But one thing was true. Quinn really had cut off his way forward. Otherwise she wouldn’t have distanced herself from Lucy too.

Playing hard to get?

Julian almost wished that were the case. But it wasn’t.

Zeke leaned closer again and studied him.

“Still,” he said slowly, “is it really possible that a woman would turn you down?”

Julian took another sip of whiskey. “She’s different.”

“Yeah, yeah, she’s different,” Zeke said with a low whistle. “Wow. You’re really in deep, aren’t you?”

Julian didn’t respond.

He leaned back against the couch, his tall frame sinking into the shadows of the dimly lit booth.

The private room was filled with noise and laughter. Several women had already noticed Julian and kept glancing in his direction, clearly tempted to approach him.

When Zeke came back from the restroom, a small group of them immediately surrounded him.

“Zeke,” one sharp-chinned girl said sweetly, “why don’t you introduce us? We just want to go over and say hi to Mr. Sterling.”

Zeke rolled his eyes.

“Cut it out. You suddenly care about manners tonight? I’ve never seen you this polite before.”

Most of the women here came from wealthy families themselves, otherwise they wouldn’t be part of this social circle.

A few had come as someone’s date and weren’t really part of the group.

For some of them, tonight was the first time they had ever seen Julian in person.

The man was tall, strikingly handsome, and carried himself with quiet authority.

Even without knowing anything about his family or status, that face alone would have been enough to draw attention anywhere

But the truth was even more intimidating. Julian stood at the very top of the social pyramid.

And unlike many men in his position, he kept his distance from women. For many women, that combination was dangerously appealing.

But Julian’s presence was also intimidating.

He sat there with a quiet intensity that made it clear he wasn’t interested in being disturbed.

The men in the room respected him almost instinctively. If they admired anyone, it was Julian.

And if they feared anyone a little, it was also Julian. Compared with him, Zeke seemed far easier to approach.

Zeke was always friendly with women.

Another girl nudged him and said playfully, “Look at him sitting there alone. Doesn’t he look a little lonely? We just want to keep him company for a bit.”

Zeke lifted his gaze and looked toward the corner.

Julian was sitting by himself, the lively noise of the room somehow separated from him.

They were all in the same place, yet he seemed to exist in a completely different space.

The tall, handsome man sat in the dim light, quietly drinking.

There was something distant and slightly melancholy in his expression.

Any woman who saw that might feel the urge to walk over, talk to him, ease the tension between his brows, and draw him out of that shadowed silence.

The stronger and more accomplished a man was, the more powerful the contrast when he revealed even the slightest hint of vulnerability.

And that contrast could be irresistible.
