As soon as Julian arrived, more people gathered around the table, each subtly trying to sit a little closer to him
In their social circle, eligible bachelors were already rare. Someone like Julian was on an entirely different level. Wealthy, powerful, still single, and widely respected. That combination made him the kind of man famílies quietly hoped their daughters would end up marrying.
In families like theirs, marriages were often strategic. The number of truly suitable matches within their circle was actually pretty
small.
Julian, however, was clearly at the very top of that list.
Among the women present tonight, Clara Goodwin’s background made her one of the most obvious candidates.
Before Julian arrived, several people had already teased her about it.
She had just returned from graduate school overseas. She came from a prominent family, had a polished education, and carried herself with quiet confidence.
Looking across Lakeshore City’s elite circles, there were only a handful of second-generation heirs who could realistically match
her.
Clara had greeted Lucy earlier with polite small talk, but after a few sentences she excused herself and moved away.
Even if she was interested in Julian, she had her own

The seating arrangement itself carried an unspoken order. No one

explained it, yet everyone understood where they belonged.
Julian ignored him completely. Instead, he lifted his eyes toward Lucy.
“Living alone now, huh?” he asked. “Getting used to it yet?”
Lucy groaned dramatically. “Not even a little. It’s quiet, it’s boring, and sometimes it’s honestly a little creepy at night. But Quinn promised she’ll stay over on weekends so I won’t lose my mind. Right, Quinn?”
Quinn smiled. “Right.”
Lucy turned to Jess. “You should come too. The more the better.”
Jess had not even opened her mouth yet when Clara spoke up.
“That might be a little awkward.”
Lucy barely knew Clara beyond polite greetings. She had never liked her, even back in school. Something about Clara always felt

overly polished and fake.
Lucy raised an eyebrow. “Why would that be awkward? I wasn’t inviting you.”
Clara curved her lips in a calm smile.

“Lucy,” she said gently, “the moment I heard you inviting her to stay at your place, I realized there’s probably something you don’t. know.”
Lucy frowned. “Then just say it. Stop being mysterious.”
“Lucy,” Jess suddenly said.
Her tone was calm but firm.
“I just remembered something I need to handle. Mind if I head out early?”
Lucy blinked in surprise. “What? Since when do you have plans? Don’t worry about anything. I’m right here. Nobody’s giving you a
hard time.”
Jess smiled and shook her head. “No one’s bothering me. I just don’t want to kill the mood.”
“That’s not happening,” Lucy said quickly, hooking her arm around Jess’s. “Sit down. You’re my friend. Let’s see who dares make snide comments.”
Jess hesitated for a moment, then sat back down.
She glanced at Clara.
Clara spoke again, “If you two are really friends,” she said calmly, “then honesty should be part of that friendship.”
Lucy was getting impatient. “What exactly are you trying to say? We’re about to start the holiday week. I’m not in the mood for drama tonight.”
“I’m not trying to start anything,” Clara replied. “I just think it’s important to keep certain boundaries in mind when men and women spend time together.”
Jess rested her chin on her hand and looked at her.
“Right,” she said casually. “I’m a man. That’s what you’ve been hinting at, isn’t it?”
The words dropped like a rock into still water. Quinn and Lucy both turned to stare at Jess as if they had misheard.
Jess looked at Quinn. “Sorry,” she said quietly. “I didn’t mean to hide it from you.”
Quinn was still processing what she had just heard.
Lucy, however, reacted almost instantly. She lifted her hand and gave Jess a friendly pat on the shoulder.
“So what if you’re a guy?” she said with a grin. “You’re still my friend. That doesn’t change anything. Right, Quinn?”
Quinn snapped out of her shock and nodded quickly.
“Right.”

Chapter 131 An Awkward Reveal
Jess… was actually a man. Quinn suddenly felt her body tense.
The side of her body closest to Jess stiffened without warning.
She couldn’t help it. It was a physical reflex she had never managed to fully control.
Just then her phone rang. Quinn felt an immediate wave of relief.
“I need to take this,” she said, standing up quickly.
She stepped out of the private dining room and closed the door behind her.
Only then did she take a deep breath and look at the screen. It was Victor calling.
Quinn answered. Her lips moved slightly before she finally spoke, “Dad.”
Victor got straight to the point. “Have you talked to Rosalie lately? Do you know she’s coming back for the holidays?”
Quinn replied, “We haven’t talked much. She mentioned she might come home around the holidays.”

“If you knew that, why haven’t you come help your mother prepare?” Victor said sharply. “Tomorrow is New Year’s Day. Your sister isn’t here yet, and you still can’t be bothered to come home?”
Quinn frowned.
“I went back yesterday,” she said quietly. “Wasn’t Mom the one who refused to let me in?”
With the holidays approaching, she had thought it would be nice to visit the people who raised her.
She even brought gifts.
Elaine had not even opened the door.
“Your mother was upset,” Victor said impatiently. “Couldn’t you try a little harder to comfort her? Everything we do is for your own good. Do you really have so little patience?”
Quinn spoke calmly, “If this is about the divorce, I’m not changing my mind. I’m going through with it.”
“That’s exactly why I say you’re ungrateful,” Victor snapped. “Have you thought about how this makes us look? If you get divorced, how are we supposed to face our colleagues at the university?”
