Chapter 139 The Lie That Works
Chase let out a bitter laugh on the phone. “I guess I’m just not good enough for Rosalie.”
That right there was Rosalie’s real talent.

She had a way of subtly getting inside people’s heads, slowly reshaping how they saw themselves without them even realizing it.
Even someone like Chase, who most people would describe as a successful and capable young man, ended up feeling inferior whenever he stood in front of her.
That alone said a lot about how skilled Rosalie was.
Quinn stayed quiet for a moment, then asked, “Did you know Rosalie has a boyfriend?”
Chase froze. “What did you just say?”
“I said Rosalie already has a boyfriend,” Quinn replied calmly. “Honestly, if you divorced me and actually tried to pursue her, you might still have a chance. But if you stay married to me and become her brother- in–law, the moment she gets married, that door closes forever.”
Quinn was telling the truth.
She had not originally planned to bring it up, but knowing Rosalie had a boyfriend would definitely affect Chase.
And if it helped push this divorce forward, she was willing to use it.
Chase’s voice was still full of doubt.
“She really has a boyfriend? You’re not making this up just to mess with me, are you? If that’s true, why didn’t she tell me?”
Quinn said quietly, “Maybe because she didn’t want you to keep chasing after her.”
She paused before adding, “Don’t you at least want to try? What if your sincerity actually moves her?”
Chase scoffed.
“Don’t think you can manipulate me with a couple of random comments. I’ll figure this out myself.”
He hung up immediately.
But the uneasiness in his chest would not go away.
Rosalie has a boyfriend? No way.
She had told him before that plenty of men were pursuing her, but she had not accepted any of them.
Quinn must be lying. Yes, that had to be it.

She was trying to throw him off balance.
Still, one thought kept creeping back into his mind.
Finished
Just like Quinn had said, if Rosalie eventually started dating someone seriously or even got married, and he was still technically her brother–in–law, then there would truly be no future for them.
The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became.
Even though he had pretended not to care in front of Quinn, deep down he knew she was not wrong.
He grabbed his phone and called Rosalie.
She picked up quickly. Her voice sounded gentle and warm.
“Chase, happy New Year.”
“Rosalie.” Chase said, “I got the New Year gift you sent me. I really like it. Thank you.”
“It’s nothing expensive,” Rosalie replied with a soft laugh. “Just a little something.”
Right now she still needed to keep Chase on her side.
As long as he continued dragging out the divorce with Quinn, things worked in her favor.
Even if Quinn eventually divorced him, it could not happen until Rosalie secured things with Julian first.
“Your thoughtfulness means a lot to me,” Chase said. Then he went straight to the point. “Rosalie, are you… seeing someone?”
Rosalie paused. She understood Chase very well.
He was impulsive, dramatic, and immature. The moment things did not go his way, he tended to become stubborn and clingy.
She had never truly respected him.
But if he lost control and started harassing her publicly, it could still damage her reputation.
She immediately answered, “Of course not. Who told you that?”
“So you’re not?” Chase sounded visibly relieved. “Quinn told me.”
Rosalie cursed under her breath internally, but her voice remained light and amused.
“That’s ridiculous. Sure, a few guys have tried asking me out, but I turned them down. You know the kind of man I want. Someone who’s completely devoted to me and ambitious enough to build a real future.”
Chase jumped at the opportunity. “Rosalie, I’ve always been devoted to you. And I’ve been working hard. all these years.”
Inside, Rosalie almost rolled her eyes.

Charles has always been the one running the family business. And you’re already this old, yet you still can’t take responsibility for anything.
But she continued smiling as she spoke, “I know you’re talented, Chase. I really do. But sometimes things just aren’t meant to happen.”
“Rosalie…”
“Alright.” she said gently. “I actually have class soon, so I can’t stay on the phone. We’ll talk another time.
Before hanging up. Chase hurriedly added, “I bought you something. Someone should drop it off tonight. I hope you like it.”
Every gift Chase bought was ridiculously expensive.
Rosalie loved accepting them because they helped maintain the image she liked to show people.
“Oh Chase, you didn’t have to do that again,” she said lightly. “You know I’m not really into material things.”
“I wanted to get it for you,” Chase insisted. “Just accept it this once, okay? I picked it out myself.”
Rosalie pretended to hesitate.
“Alright then. But this is the last time, okay?”
After hanging up, Chase felt much better. Still, he could not help muttering a few insults about Quinn.
How dare she lie to him like that?
It was completely outrageous. What Quinn did not know was that Rosalie had effortlessly talked Chase back into believing her within minutes.
Meanwhile, Quinn had spent most of the afternoon sleeping in her dorm.
When she finally woke up, she noticed several missed calls on her phone.
They were all from Lucy. She quickly called back, and Lucy answered almost immediately.
“Quinn, have you managed to reach Jess? I can’t get ahold of him.”
“I texted him as soon as I left the club last night, but he never replied,” Quinn explained. “Take a breath and tell me what’s going on.”
“I messaged him this morning too, but still nothing,” Lucy said anxiously. “He left a bracelet at my place last night. I wanted to return it, so I tried calling him a few times, but he never picked up. I’m starting to worry something might’ve happened.”
