Victor frowned, clearly not satisfied.

Victor said, “Quinn, we’re your parents. You don’t need to hide things from us.”

Quinn met his gaze, her voice steady and clear.

Quinn said, “You both know what kind of person I am. There’s no way I would be involved with someone else before my divorce. I just finalized it a couple of days ago, there’s no way I’ve already fallen for

someone.”

Victor and Elaine didn’t like Quinn much, but they couldn’t deny that she had always been principled, and cheating was something she would never do.

Which meant they had believed Chase too quickly.

Elaine’s face changed immediately, the warmth gone as if it had never been there.

Elaine said, “So we got our hopes up for nothing?”

Victor’s expression darkened as well.

Victor said, “Then this divorce was a huge mistake. Did you really finalize it? This is ridiculous. I’ll call Chase right now, you two can fix this and get remarried.”

That was when Quinn finally understood everything clearly.

They thought she had found someone better than Chase, someone with more power and status, and that was the only reason they supported her decision to divorce.

A quiet, almost bitter smile appeared on her lips.

So that’s all it was. Nothing changed. Not really.

She had wondered, for a moment, whether things might be different.

Now she knew better. Quinn stood up.

Quinn said, “I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I’m divorced, and I have nothing to do with Chase anymore. I’m not getting back together with him.”

Elaine’s tone sharpened instantly.

Elaine said, “How can you be this naive? We’re doing this for your own good. Look at your sister, look at the kind of man she found, and then look at you. You finally married into the Sterling family and then threw it away.”

Quinn didn’t react.

Quinn said, “I’m not her. You can be proud of her. As for me, you don’t need to worry.”

Elaine said, “You think we want to worry about you? People know you’re our daughter. Now that you’re divorced, it reflects on us too,”

Quinn looked at her, calm but distant.

Quinn said, “So if I were dating someone powerful, that would make you look better?”

Victor frowned.

Victor said, “Watch your tone. Your mother and I are not like that. At the end of the day, we just want you to have a good life.”

Quinn gave a small nod.

Quinn said, “I think I’m doing just fine. Thank you for your concern. If there’s nothing else, I’m going to

head out.”

Elaine’s voice cut in sharply.

Elaine said, “When your sister comes back with her boyfriend, the whole family is having dinner together. You either show up with Chase, or don’t come at all.”

Quinn didn’t hesitate.

Quinn said, “Then I won’t come.”

She turned and walked out without looking back.

She shouldn’t have expected anything from this place in the first place. If she hadn’t, it wouldn’t hurt this much now.

By the time she got downstairs, the cold air hit her face, sharp and biting, and her eyes instantly burned.

Tears slipped out before she could stop them.

She wiped them away quickly, took a breath, and kept walking forward.

Her phone rang.

Quinn answered immediately.

Quinn said, “Hello?”

On the other end, Lucy’s voice came through, shaky and uneven. Lucy said, “Quinn…”

Quinn’s chest tightened.

Quinn said, “Lucy, what happened? Don’t cry, just tell me.”

The voice on the line shifted.

Quinn said, “Which hospital? I’m coming now.”

Lucy felt like the entire day had gone sideways.

She had stopped by her mom’s place earlier, and her mom had baked a batch of desserts and insisted she bring some over to Julian.

To be honest, her mom and Julian weren’t especially close, but her mom had always wanted to stay on good terms with him, so Lucy had no choice but to make the trip.
