Chapter 410 Pain That Never Fades

“Reach out anytime if you need any help here in Lakeshore City,” Juhan said. “I’m free to sign the contract whenever you’re ready.”
After ending the call, Mark turned to look at his wife Xenia. Her face held a sickly pale shade, yet her features stayed delicate, and her eyes held the innocent light of someone sheltered from the harsh world.
“You can go to social events if you need to,” she said softly. “I can stay by myself just fine.”
“I can’t,” Mark pulled her into his arms right after hanging up. “I won’t feel at ease letting you eat alone.”
Xenia let out a gentle laugh. “I’m not a little kid anymore.”
Her meals were specially prepared by a professional nutritionist, with plenty of food she had to avoid. She also ate very little each day. She would even skip meals entirely if no one kept an eye on her.
During one of Mark’s business trips years ago, she had not eaten a single bite the whole day, leaving all the household staff extremely worried. When Mark came back, he asked her angrily why she had gone without food, and she simply said she was not hungry.
From that day on, Mark barely went away on work trips again. He made sure to stay close just to watch her eat properly. He never blamed her for her odd moods, for even she herself could not understand why she acted that way.
She suffered from severe depression. Ever since their daughter went missing, she had been trapped in endless self-blame and guilt. Over the years, she had tried to end her own life many times, and she would not have pulled through without Mark staying by her side.
The worst incident happened when she locked herself in the bathroom for ages. Worried sick, Mark broke the door down and found she had tried to drown herself. He broke down in tears that day.
“You lost our child and feel like giving up on life, but have you ever thought about me?” he had cried out “What am I supposed to do without you? If life has to end, we will face it together.”
Xenia could not bear to see Mark hurt himself, so she forced herself to carry on living. Still, life held little joy for her apart from staying beside him. She had tried hard to cast away suicidal thoughts after that terrible day, yet she still paid no mind to trivial things like regular meals. That was why Mark stayed so anxious and kept close watch over her daily life.
Doctors found no physical illness in her body, yet constant low spirits messed up all her bodily functions, a problem no amount of wealth could fix.
Mark had originally planned to make the short solo trip to Lakeshore City, sign the deal and head back within half a day. He had mentioned the trip to Xenia though, and she said she wanted to come along too It was the first time she had shown interest in anything in such a long time, so Mark agreed without hesitation.
They had been each other’s first love, and their deep affection never faded with time. Tall, handsome, and powerful, Mark carried the steady charm of a mature man. Plenty of women tried to win his heart. including company employees, business partners and even famous celebrities, yet his heart belonged solely to Xenia.

Chapter 418 Pain That Never Fades
Finished
He had always shielded her from all dark and messy sides of life, keeping her simple and pure. She still thought and acted like a young girl, with the loss of their child being the only pain she could never let go
Mark seldom took her out in public, for the sight of young children would easily trigger her emotional breakdown. She once lost control completely at a family gathering after seeing a relative’s kid, as the little one reminded her of her own lost daughter.
He had stood firm against huge family pressure for years. He refused to divorce her and refused to have another child with anyone else, even when his parents strongly opposed their marriage. He held firm to his bottom line, no longer caring about his family’s opinions. With enough wealth and power, he lived his life on his own terms and let no one interfere.
He feared outdoor trips would expose her to kids, yet he also worried staying cooped up indoors all day would worsen her mental state. So he always sent bodyguards ahead to clear their path and steer clear of places with young children. Though it caused extra trouble, he could easily afford such arrangements.
On this trip, he took her to wander along old narrow alleys. They had visited this place together more than twenty years ago, back when they were young mad lovers not yet married. They had never come back here ever since their daughter disappeared, for sorrow had long wiped away all their old sweet moods.
