“Then I’ll keep pushing it through the courts,” Quinn said calmly. “If it doesn’t go through the first time, I’ll try again. However long it takes, I’m getting that divorce.”
“Alright,” Veronica said. “Whatever you decide, I’ll support you.”
The moment she finished speaking, her phone rang.
Julian was calling.
She answered.
“Did you go to the courthouse?” Julian asked. “Did everything go smoothly?”
Quinn was sitting right beside her.
Veronica replied, “I’m in the parking lot right now, about to head back. The divorce… Chase changed his mind.”
When Quinn heard Veronica mention the divorce, she turned her head to look at her.
She assumed Lucy must be the one on the phone. Veronica handed the phone to her.
“I’m driving,” she said. “You talk to him.”
Quinn took the phone and held it to her ear. “Lucy.”
A deep, pleasant voice came from the other end.
“It’s me.”
Quinn instantly became flustered. “M–Mr. Sterling?”
Julian could hear the tension in her voice.
S
His fingers tightened around the phone. The knuckles turned pale, and Quinn even had the sudden urge to hang up.
Julian spoke first, “Do you need any help?”
Quinn answered almost instantly.
“No.”
Her tone came out so stiff that even Veronica glanced at her while driving.
A moment later Quinn realized who she was speaking to.
Julian was not an ordinary man. He was someone powerful, someone far above her social circle. He had lowered himself to offer help. Out of basic courtesy, she should not sound so cold.

She took a slow breath and softened her voice. “Thank you, Mr. Sterling. I can handle it myself.”
Even though she tried to hide it, Julian could still feel the distance in her voice.
Finched
Something in his chest tightened. The hand holding the phone stiffened, veins rising under the skin.
Several seconds passed before he finally spoke.
“You have my contact information. If you need anything, you can reach out anytime.”
“Thank you, Mr. Sterling. I understand,” she said carefully. “Is there anything else you needed?”
She called him Mr. Sterling again. Every step he took closer, she retreated two more.
In the world of business, Julian ruled like a general commanding armies. Deals, negotiations, corporate battles, nothing ever slowed him down.
But in front of her, he could barely move forward at all.
What else could he say? He ended the call.
An irritation rose in his chest and he suddenly wanted a cigarette. A knock sounded on the door.
Before he could answer, the door opened. Who had the nerve to walk in without permission?
Julian’s sharp gaze snapped toward the entrance.
It landed on the visitor.
Zeke stood there with both hands in his pockets. He kicked the door shut behind him and strolled in with a crooked grin.
“Busy?”
With a soft click, Julian lit a cigarette.
Zeke held out his hand. “Give me one.”
Julian slid the cigarette pack across the desk.
“What are you doing here?”
“My grandma is forcing me to go on blind dates,” Zeke said with a sigh. “I came here to hide. Every day she nags me about getting married like it’s a life–or–death emergency. You’d think staying single was some kind of crime.”
Julian did not bother responding.
Zeke studied him. “You’re lucky. Nobody pressures you to get married.
Seeing that Julian still said nothing, Zeke leaned closer with an obvious look of curiosity.
So how are things going with Quinn? Did you win her over yet?”

“Watch how you talk,” Julian said sharply.
Zeke raised both hands.
“Alright, alright, my mistake. Let me rephrase. How far have the two of you gotten?”
Julian flicked the ash from his cigarette. His long fingers looked almost lonely in the drifting smoke.
Zeke studied his expression. “Don’t tell me there’s been zero progress.”
“She’s not divorced yet,” Julian said at last. “Things didn’t go well.”
“You didn’t step in?” Zeke looked surprised. “If you put a little pressure on Chase, the guy would be terrified. Forget divorce, he’d lose his soul.”
“No one knows how I feel about her,” Julian said quietly. “And I don’t intend for anyone to know.”
He paused. “She’s still married. Her reputation matters.”
Zeke clicked his tongue.
“You’re really thinking about her. Too bad she has no idea. All that effort and you’re basically flirting with a brick wall.”
He laughed. “Once she’s divorced, you should go after her right away. Honestly, I can’t even imagine what you’d look like in a relationship.”
Julian glanced at him. “You don’t know what dating looks like?”
“Come on, we’re not the same,” Zeke said. “You stay miles away from women. I’ve seen plenty of beautiful women try their luck with you, and every single one of them left defeated.”
He grinned. “At one point I honestly thought you had no interest in women at all.”
Zeke noticed Julian frowning. Julian stubbed out the cigarette before it was finished.
“What’s with the long face?” Zeke asked. “Is there really something in this world

Outside, the city was glowing under the golden light of sunset. Traffic flowed endlessly through the streets below.
He suddenly asked, “Why don’t you want to get married?”
Zeke walked over and stood beside him.
“Simple,” he said. “I’m not ready to settle down.”
“You’re not like Maddox,” Julian said, “Don’t make yourself sound worse than you are.”
Zeke let out a long breath. “Blind dates arranged by family are all the same. The only thing anyone cares

He shrugged.

“You get married, then what? Two people going through the motions, being polite to each other while living completely separate lives. Smiling and acting loving in public, pretending everything’s perfect.”
He shook his head. “Tell me honestly. What’s the point of that?”
