Chapter 70 An Awkward Call

Lucy grabbed Quinn’s arm. “Don’t go anywhere,” she said nervously. “Sit next to me and give me moral support.”
Quinn had no choice but to sit beside her.
Lacy took a deep breath and dialed Julian’s number. The phone rang three or four times before the call connected.
Julian’s low voice came through the speaker, and somehow it sounded even deeper through the phone.
“Feeling better now that the alcohol has worn off?”
Lucy glanced at Quinn before speaking.
“Seven… I wanted to ask something. Do you have some kind of misunderstanding about me? Also, why did you suddenly give me that house and tell me to move?”
“A misunderstanding?” Julian replied calmly. “Tell me what misunderstanding you think I have.”
Lucy hesitated, then blurted out, “If this is about me messing around with Quinn last night… that’s totally normal, okay? Girls joke around like that all the time. Back in my college dorm, my roommates and I would mess around like that constantly.”
As she spoke, she turned toward Quinn. “If you don’t believe me, ask Quinn.”
Quinn had not expected to be dragged into this conversation so suddenly.
She waved her hands nervously.
Lucy mouthed silently, “Please, please help me.”
Then she turned on the speaker. Quinn had no choice but to take the phone.
“Mr. Sterling.”
“Yes,” Julian replied. “Is that kind of behavior common among women? When you lived in the dorms, did people act like that with you too?”
Lucy blinked in surprise.
Why did Seven suddenly sound gentler when he spoke to Quinn?
When he talked to Lucy, his tone always sounded strict.
Is that just my imagination?
Quinn answered carefully, “It’s not something everyone does, but it’s not unusual either. It’s usually just joking around, nothing serious. Kind of like how guys sometimes throw an arm around each other’s
shoulders.”

Lucy immediately gave her a big thumbs up. She thought that explanation sounded pretty convincing. Julian replied calmly. “I don’t put my arms around people.”
His tone carried a trace of seriousness.
Quinn suddenly did not know how to respond.
Julian continued speaking.
“Even when people are joking around, there should still be boundaries. Excessive physical contact is inappropriate and shows poor manners. Maintaining a respectful distance is a basic rule of social interaction.”
Quinn quietly pushed the phone back toward Lucy.
Lucy took it. “Seven, you’re talking about normal social situations. My relationship with my roommates, or with Quinn, is obviously different.”
Julian’s voice remained steady.
“No matter how close the relationship is, there should still be limits. Certain parts of the body are private. Touching people carelessly does not exactly qualify as polite behavior.”
Lucy rubbed her forehead.
“Seven, we were talking about whether my sexual orientation is normal. I’m perfectly normal. I like men. Isn’t that enough? Everything else is just harmless joking.”
Julian’s tone suddenly turned colder.
“What limits do you think you have? Is that how your parents raised you, to touch people however you like?”
“But Quinn isn’t just anyone!” Lucy protested. “And she’s a girl. What’s wrong with me touching her?”
Julian asked calmly, “Did you consider how the other person might feel?”
Lucy immediately turned to Quinn. “Quinn, are you really saying I can’t even mess around with you a little?”
Quinn could clearly tell that Julian cared strongly about this issue.
He carried himself with elegance and discipline. To someone like him, Lucy’s behavior probably seemed very inappropriate.
Quinn spoke quickly.
“I think it’s better to be careful about things like that. That kind of behavior can come across as a little… impolite.”
As she spoke, she winked subtly at Lucy.

They had enough understanding between them to communicate without words.

“Oh right, you’re absolutely right,” she said quickly. “I’ll definitely be more careful from now on. If you don’t give me permission. I won’t touch you again.”
Julian replied calmly, “I doubt anyone would give permission for something like that. In any case, I don’t want to see it happen again.”
“Got it. Seven,” Lucy said quickly.
Then she hurried to change the subject. “But why did you give me a house and tell me to move?”
Julian answered casually, “When your friend stays over, it’s inconvenient if there’s only one bed. The new place has several bedrooms, so there’s plenty of space.”
Lucy’s eyes lit up. “Wow, Seven, that’s actually really thoughtful. But it might not matter. Quinn will probably move out soon anyway. Then I’ll be alone again, and living in such a big house might actually feel a little scary.”
Julian said calmly. “If you feel uncomfortable living there alone, you could rent out one of the extra bedrooms.”
Lucy suddenly looked excited.
“That’s actually a great idea! Quinn, you’re planning to rent a place anyway, right? You could just rent a room from me. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely charge you rent,” she added with a grin. “But at least we’d get to live together. It’s a win win.”
Quinn felt puzzled.
Earlier, Julian had clearly implied that she should move out as soon as possible so she would stop bothering Lucy.
So why was he now suggesting Lucy rent the place out?
What exactly was he thinking? Quinn stayed silent.
Lucy started shaking her arm impatiently.
“Quinn, say something!”
Julian spoke again, “I’m not comfortable with Lucy living alone. If she’s offering you the room, you should consider it.”
Quinn could easily refuse Lucy.
But now that Julian had spoken, she suddenly did not know how to respond.
Lucy tugged on her sleeve, swaying back and forth.
“Quinn, come on. Quinn…”
