“You don’t have to put it like that,” Chase said. “I already told you I’ll change. Just watch what I do from now

on.”

“Whether you change or not is your business,” Quinn replied calmly. “Accepting it or not is mine. You keep forcing your expectations onto me without respecting what I want. And now you’re asking for another chance?”

“I’ll prove it to you,” Chase said firmly. “I won’t force you anymore, but I’m not agreeing to a divorce. Quinn, I truly want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Quinn looked at him and gave a faint smile.

“Really? Then what about Rosalie? Isn’t she the one you used to love?”

Chase sighed helplessly.

“Quinn, why do you keep bringing her up? Yes, I liked her bor but that’s in the past. All I want now is to

live a good life with you. Can we just stop talking about her?”

“I can’t accept a husband who still has someone else in his heart,” Quinn said. “And you were able to treat me like an object and hand me over to someone else. If something like that happens once, it can happen again. I can’t trust you anymore.”

“I was being threatened by Maddox,” Chase said quickly. “If you want, you can contact him right now. We can confront him face to face. I was forced into it.”

He suddenly looked at her.

“You can contact him, right? I don’t know why, but I can’t reach him anymore. I heard he went overseas.”

He studied her expression. “What did he say to you?”

Quinn lowered her gaze and looked at her hands.

Right now she wanted nothing more than to slap Chase across the face.

But even hitting him meant touching him. And she didn’t want that.

This man disgusted her. He had sent her to Maddox’s bed.

If he had truly been forced, if he had felt even the slightest bit of guilt, he would never bring that man up again.

Because if Maddox had actually hurt her, then Maddox would be a scar she carried forever.

Mentioning him would only reopen the wound.

Yet Chase spoke about him without hesitation and even shamelessly asked whether they were still in

contact.

Quinn raised her eyes. “What exactly do you want to hear? What would make you happy? That Maddox and I get along well?”

“That’s not what I meant,” Chase said quickly, clearly uncomfortable. “Why would I want that? I’m just worried he might come after us. You know how powerful his family is. We’re no match for people like

them.”

Quinn looked straight at him.

“Then let me ask you something. If he wanted to keep seeing me, what do you think I should do?”

“Did he actually say that?” Chase blurted out. “Don’t worry. I won’t make the same mistake again. Even if it costs me my life, I won’t let him hurt you again.”

Quinn gave a short, cold laugh.

“So I’m supposed to thank you for that?”

“Quinn, I really want to spend the rest of my life with you,” Chase insisted. “I mean it. I’m not just saying it. You don’t have to test me. I won’t mess up again.”

“You know something?” Quinn said quietly. “The Quinn you used to know is already gone.”

She looked straight at him.

“She died the day you sent her away. Chase, people can change after making mistakes. But someone who’s already dead doesn’t come back.”

“But you’re not dead,” Chase said immediately. “Your parents forgave me. Rosalie forgave me too. Why can’t you? Didn’t you love me before?”

Quinn let out a self–mocking laugh.

“I was blind back then. Everyone falls for the wrong guy at least once when they’re young. But I’ve woken up now. Chase, stop forcing yourself. This isn’t going to work”

“I’ll prove my sincerity to you,” he said stubbornly.

He stepped back and placed the flowers and the gift on the cabinet by the door.

“I’ll keep trying until you forgive me.”

Then he turned and walked away.

Quinn looked at the flowers and gift sitting on the cabinet. They felt incredibly irritating to look at. The door behind her opened.

Lucy poked her head out.

“He left? What happened? What did you two talk about?”

Quinn shook her head. “It didn’t work. I’m filing a lawsuit.”

Earlier, after Charles pleaded with her, Quinn had agreed to settle the police matter privately.

But Chase had still hit her.

That fact alone could be used as evidence in court. If one lawsuit didn’t secure the divorce, she would file another.

No matter what, she was ending this marriage.

That afternoon Quinn had planned to go look for a new place to live. But Lucy insisted she move in with her instead and even joked about charging rent.

The apartment was big enough that they would each have their own space.

Besides, Julian had asked Quinn to keep an eye on Lucy.

In the end, Quinn agreed. Still, something about it puzzled her.

Before, Julian had clearly wanted her to move out as soon as possible. So why had he changed his mind after buying Lucy a new place?

The truth was, Julian had thought it through carefully. At first, he had misunderstood Lucy’s feelings for Quinn.

He had assumed Lucy liked her in a romantic way.
