Chapter 79 More Than Strangers
Finished
“Earlier, when I suggested you move out, it was only because Lucy’s place was too small,” Julian explained in a calm, steady voice. “Two people living there would feel cramped. I figured a bigger place would be more comfortable for both of you. That way each of you has your own bedroom and a little more privacy.”
For a moment Quinn wondered if she had misheard him.
She looked up at Julian.
Julian was already looking at her.
His eyes carried a depth that seemed almost bottomless, though the feelings hidden there were not something anyone could easily read. Even Julian himself could not bring himself to put them into words, so in the end, he simply explained things as plainly as he could.
“You’re Lucy’s friend,” he said. “That means you’re not just anyone to me. She’s my cousin, so if you’re important to her, I’ll treat you like family too.”
“Family…
The word felt warm.
Just hearing it made something in Quinn’s chest soften. She suddenly found herself envying Lucy.
It was not even about Lucy’s family background.
Lucy had parents who loved each other deeply and adored their daughter. She had siblings who stayed close and supported one another, and a handful of loyal friends she could always count on.
She moved through life freely, bright and openhearted, warm and kind.
It seemed like Lucy had been given every good thing the world could offer. Compared to that, Quinn felt like her own life had been painfully bleak.
She had never had parents who cherished her, nor a sister who genuinely cared about her.
Her parents played favorites, and her sister had always treated her cruelly.
To Quinn, Julian was still practically a stranger.
First he had saved her on the yacht, and now he was telling her he would look out for her like family.
She could not deny the ripples spreading through her heart.
How could Lucy have such an amazing cousin?
Part of Quinn wished she had a cousin like that too.
“Thank you,” she said softly, her voice tightening as emotion caught in her throat, After that, she did not dare say anything more.

Julian watched her carefully.

“You don’t have to thank me,” he said. “If something’s on your mind, you can ask me directly. I’d rather clear things up than let you misunderstand anything.”
“There’s nothing else,” Quinn replied quietly. “Still… no matter what, I should thank you.”
“If you mean what happened on the yacht.” Julian said slowly, “then I might actually owe you an apology.”
Quinn looked up at him without meaning to.
Every time she really looked at him, the same thought crossed her mind. This man was unbelievably good–looking.
“I want to apologize for anything inappropriate I did that day,” Julian said, his voice low and sincere. “I’m sorry. That was my mistake. I’m not expecting you to forgive me, but I hope you’ll at least accept the apology.”
Quinn had never expected something like this.
Julian stood so high above most people in terms of status and influence.
The two of them lived in completely different worlds.
If she had not known Lucy, their paths probably would never have crossed again.
He was the kind of powerful, distant man people rarely even approached, and yet here he was apologizing to her.
Deep down Quinn knew the truth.
If Julian had not stepped in that day on the yacht, no one would have blamed him.
In fact, most people would never even have known what happened. But he had stepped in.
Whatever his reasons had been, the fact remained that he had saved her.
And in that chaotic moment, when her body had been out of control, it was possible that before he had done anything questionable, she might have crossed the line first.
Any normal man might have reacted in that situation.
And in the end she had walked away without real harm. Aside from the kiss and the brief embrace, nothing worse had happened.
Honestly, that already counted as the best possible outcome under the circumstances.
Quinn could not force herself to calmly revisit everything that had happened that day.
But she knew she owed Julian gratitude. That was why she had insisted on giving him a gift in return.
As for the confusion, the awkwardness, and the unexpected intimacy during the rescue, both of them had silently agreed to pretend it never happened.

Neither of them wanted to bring it up again. Yet today Julian was apologizing so formally.
And somehow, when a man like him apologized, it carried a completely different weight.
If it had been someone else, Quinn might not have felt so shaken.
But now she felt almost overwhelmed.
It was the strange, unreal feeling of thinking, Someone like him is apologizing to me?
“Quinn?”
Julian finally said her name when she stayed silent for too long. The way he said it sounded unexpectedly gentle.
Lucy sometimes called her Quinn like that, in a warm, familiar tone. Hearing Julian say it the same way made her heart tremble slightly.
He had really picked up the nickname from Lucy.
“You don’t have to apologize,” Quinn said quickly. “Given the situation that day, I can imagine it wasn’t easy. If anything, I probably caused you trouble.”
Julian nodded slightly.
“That day was complicated,” he admitted, “Still, I shouldn’t have… well, anyway. To make up for it, how about I take you and Lucy out for dinner sometime?”
“Really, that’s not necessary…”
Before she could finish, Julian asked, “You said you’d make me something as a thank–you. Does that offer still stand?”
Quinn had never believed Julian actually needed the clothing she planned to make.
She had even wondered whether, once she finished it, the piece would simply end up hanging untouched in his closet.
So why had he asked for it?
And now he was bringing it up again.
Quinn decided to be honest.
“To be fair, compared to the private designers you probably work with, my sewing skills aren’t exactly impressive,” she said.
