Chapter 81 A Sudden Reaction

Finished

The bed was right behind them. When Quinn shoved him away. Julian lost his balance and dropped onto the edge of the mattress.

Her body reacted faster than her mind. The moment a man got too close, her instinct was to push him

away.

But instead of separating them, the motion pulled her forward along his arm. Julian sat down on the bed, and Quinn stumbled straight toward him.

Lucy pushed the door open at that exact moment and froze in shock.

“What on earth are you two doing?”

From where she stood, it looked like Quinn had just thrown herself into Julian’s arms.

Because he was sitting and Quinn was still standing, she had leaned forward without meaning to, her head lowered as her soft lips brushed against Julian’s forehead.

Lucy’s eyes widened.

She had only stepped out to grab a few things. In the time it took her to run an errand, her own cousin and her best friend had apparently started a relationship?

Wait, not only did they already kiss, Quinn

was the one who leaned in first?

No. that can’t be right. Quinn isn’t even divorced yet.

So what does that make Seven? The other man?

No. Absolutely not.

Lucy hurried inside and shut the door behind her so no one in the hallway would see.

“Seven, you can’t do this. Quinn hasn’t even finished her divorce yet. Quinn!”

She stopped mid sentence when she noticed Quinn’s face.

Quinn looked pale. A thin sheen of sweat covered her forehead. One hand flew to her mouth as she shoved Julian away and rushed toward the bathroom.

The IV needle was ripped straight out of the back of her hand, and a bead of blood instantly appeared.

“Quinn!”

Lucy panicked and rushed after her.

Quinn staggered into the bathroom, dropping to her knees beside the toilet as she began retching.

But she had barely eaten that morning because of the fever.

Her stomach churned violently, yet all that came up was a little water.

Lucy’s heart pounded as she grabbed Quinn’s hand and pressed a tissue against the bleeding spot where the needle had been.

“Quinn, what’s going on? Are you okay?”

Just seconds ago she had seen Quinn kissing Julian. Now she was throwing up.

Lucy looked up and saw Julian standing in the doorway. “Seven, go get Dr. Harrison!”

Gunnar Harrison arrived quickly.

Lucy helped Quinn out of the bathroom. Gunnar stepped closer. “What happened?”

Before he could even finish the question, Quinn saw him approaching and immediately stepped back several feet, nearly hitting the bathroom doorframe.

Julian spoke sharply from the side.

“Give her some space.”

Gunnar glanced at Julian and seemed to understand.

Lucy was anxious but did not dare say much. She helped Quinn over to the couch.

Quinn’s face was pale, her lashes damp with tears. The expression on her small face was a mix of exhaustion and guarded caution.

The ward

Lucy had been shocked when she first saw Quinn leaning toward Julian, but once the surprise faded she had actually felt happy.

If Quinn and Julian really ended up together, that would be perfect.

Her best friend would become her sister in law, and they would truly be family.

But Quinn clearly was not okay.

A thought suddenly crossed Lucy’s mind and she shot Julian a glare.

Julian barely noticed. All his attention was on Quinn. Her condition worried him. It also hurt to see her like this.

None of what had just happened was something he had expected or planned. In every other part of his life he was calm and strategic, always in control.

Yet when it came to Quinn, he found himself completely unprepared and painfully aware of how fragile she seemed.

“The medication can irritate the stomach a little,” Gunnar said. “We’ll have a nurse put the IV back in shortly. Is your stomach hurting? Can you tell me exactly what you’re feeling? If necessary I can adjust the medication.”

Chapter 81 A Sudden Reaction

Quinn had recovered slightly.

Earlier, she had not even had time to think. Her body had simply reacted.

Finished

Now that Julian and Gunnar were standing at a normal distance, and Lucy was beside her, she slowly calmed down.

She shook her head. “I’m okay. Thank you.”

“The medication can be rough if you haven’t eaten,” Gunnar said. “Did you skip breakfast?”

Lucy answered quickly. “She ate very little. I bought some food earlier. I’ll make sure she eats something.”

“Good.” Gunnar nodded. “Take care of her for now. I’ll call a nurse.”

He looked at Julian. “Come by my office for a minute?”

Julian’s eyes remained on Quinn.

But since she came out of the bathroom, Quinn had not looked at him even once.

Julian finally left, and the powerful presence that always surrounded him slowly faded from the room.

The nurse arrived soon after. Lucy helped Quinn back onto the bed while the nurse inserted a new IV line.

Once the nurse left, Lucy brought over a small box of food.

“Try eating just a little,” she said. “When the IV is finished later, I’ll take you out for a proper meal.”

Quinn had no appetite at all. The nausea had not completely faded.

But she did not want Lucy to worry. So she forced herself to pick up the smallest piece of dessert.

After that she could not eat another bite. Lucy poured her a glass of water,

Only then did Quinn remember that she had originally gotten out of bed to go to the bathroom.

Lucy grabbed the IV bag and walked with her again.

When Quinn finally lay back down on the bed afterward, she felt as if she could breathe again.

Lucy sat beside her and spoke carefully. “Quinn, about what just happened… can I ask what happened? You can tell me if you want. If you don’t, that’s okay too.”
