Chapter 90

AMELIA’s pov

“Well, I’m going to have to disappoint you, Princess,” I began calmly, “But I’m not going to use Ryder as a bargaining chip

The princess sneered and scoffed at me, “You’re just scared you’ll lose. Coward.”

Stepped close to me and her eyes flashed with Malice, “But I’m not going to let you get away so

easily!”

And with that, she shifted into her wolf form and I stepped back in shock, instinctively tightening my grip/on Noah, my heart slamming against my ribs.

She let out a chilling roar and rushed forward, covering the space between us. She was about to lay her attack, when Ryd immediately stepped between us, blocking her path.

“You don’t get to hurt her.” Ryder said coldly, shifted his hand to a paw, and swatted her away like she was nothing but a pesky fly.

She landed with a hard thud and Ryder turned to me with concern.

“Are you okay?” He asked, reaching for my hand.

I didn’t immediately reply, I was still feeling a bit embarrassed from his amnesia comment earlier.

“I’m fine, Ryder.” I said quietly and tried to tug my hand out of his reach, but he held on.

“I’m letting you go, Amelia. Because what if you sneak off with Noah again?” He asked and I looked at him uncertainly.

His gaze softened and the worry he must have felt earlier when I left with Noah, began to show, “I considered having the soldiers guard you, but I figured that would make you mighty unhappy. I just want you to be happy, Amelia.”

Something about the sincerity in his tone chipped away at my irritation, and suddenly felt a little warm inside.

I didn’t really know what to say, so I looked down at Noah instead of meeting Ryder’s eyes.

Noah looked up at Ryder and muttered under his breath, “But I’m not happy right now, and by the looks of it, that princess is even more unhappy.”

We all watched as the Princess regained her footing. She had shifted back to her human form and made her way toward the three of us.

Dust clung to her dress and her pride seemed equally bruised, yet she still held herself with rigid composure.

A true princess, I thought as I watched her.

Noah was right though. She did seem unhappy. But when she looked up at Ryder, she no longer gazed at him with desire. Instead she looked at him with fear.

“I’m sorry, “she began, “About the way I acted earlier. You’re not a prize to be won. I should have known better.”

“It’s okay.” Ryder said and looked at me.

I figured that if the princess was feeling apologetic then I might as well take advantage of whatever power she could wield.

“Do you mind if I borrow your authority for just a moment?” I asked Ryder and he seemed urprised by my question, but he nodded none the less.

“Sure, go ahead. I’ll happily follow your lead.”

“Thanks. “I replied and turned to the princess.

“Are you allowed to do anything you want to do?” I asked her and she slowly nodded.

“Of course. Why?”

“There are some missing people that I will need your help finding.” I told her, “And since your tribe is nearby, I have a f the results will come about somewhat quicker.”

“Okay.” the princess agreed, “I’ll put in my best resources and we’ll see what can be done.”

She retreated to go find some information we could use, and when she returned she had a map of a secluded area she thought we could discover something in.

“you could try here. My intel tells me there are some strange activities that have occurred for days in that place.”

She tapped the marked location twice, as though emphasizing its importance. And I decided to take her word for it.

I nodded and took the map from her, “Thank you. I hope this works.”

“Me too.” the princess said.

After that, Noah and I made our way to the secluded house, with Ryder right behind us going on and on about how I need to be careful.

“Tread lightly, Amelia!” “Watch out for that log of wood, Amelia.”

He was no better than a mother hen. But I guess I actually found his protective behavior quite cute.

We were merely several feet away from the house when Noah suddenly cried, “There’s the scent of those two bad guys in here!”

“Then why don’t we just storm in there right now and rescue the hostage?” Ryder asked and I quickly shook my head.

“We need the element of surprise. If we stormed in, it would alert the bad guys and we still don’t know where the hostage really is.” I explained, and Ryder seemed a bit put out.

“Ryder, you’re going to have to trust me on this. If you’re going to follow me there, then you really can’t interfere with what have planned.”

He let out a breath and nodded. “Fine. Okay. I understand you. Let’s do it then.”

We walked toward the house quietly, and found the front door was open.

We all but crept inside, and when we got in, I watched in amazement as Ryder pushed past Noah to stand behind me.
