Exit the Catfights Enter the Empire novel Chapter 15

Hearing those words, Evelyn's heart turned icy cold.

Actually, she had always known that compared to Calvin Lawler, she was treated like an unwanted extra as a daughter.

Joyce was nice on the surface but cold-hearted. She had two faces and endless ways to torment Evelyn. Not letting her eat at the table, making her sleep in the storage room, and locking her in the basement for days on end when she was upset—these were all standard operations.

What was worse, Joyce bought her plenty of expensive dresses, bags, and jewelry to build up her own reputation as a virtuous stepmother, but in reality, Evelyn only ever had a few sets of old clothes and worn-out shoes year-round.

Because of this, she never dared to eat too much, terrified that if she grew taller or gained weight, she wouldn't fit into those clothes anymore.

Her father turned a blind eye to all this, never offering even a word of cheap concern to his own daughter.

She had cried and complained to her mother, but her mother was weak. She would just hold her and cry, telling her to endure it. "Evelyn, it will be better when you grow up."

When Valerie had cursed her for using her status as the Lawler heiress to monopolize Xavier, Evelyn had really wanted to say that her status meant absolutely nothing.

Until later, she accidentally met Xavier, and they started hanging out together.

Back then, whenever she was wronged at home, Xavier would stand up for her. Whenever she was in danger, he would appear. If she was sad and hid away, he was always the first to find her.

If every girl has a superhero in her heart, Xavier was her superhero. He saved that young Evelyn and gave her warmth.

Warren stormed off, and Joyce left too. The dinner ended in discord, making it awkward for Evelyn to stay any longer.
