The blond man stumbled back in surprise.
Sylvia, after a moment of shock, quickly grabbed Gabriel's arm. "You've misunderstood," she said softly. "This gentleman is a friend of Grace's."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed. "He's looking for Vivian?"
"You really know Georgia! Please, can you take me to her?" the blond man pleaded, his expression a mixture of desperation and hope.
Gabriel studied him. "Why are you looking for Grace?"
"I'm a friend of hers," the man explained quickly. "I came all the way to C Country to find her. If you know her, please, take me to see her."
"Why don't you just call her?"
"I wanted to surprise her, but I lost my phone after I got here. I can't call her, and I don't know exactly where she is," he said, his shoulders slumping. "I've been wandering around this town all day."
"You came all this way to find her, which means you must be close. You lost your phone, but you don't remember her number?" Gabriel's tone was icy, like an interrogation.
Sylvia suddenly remembered the phone call Grace had taken on their first day at the estate. Her eyes lit up. She tugged on Gabriel's arm and said to the blond man, "We know where she is. We can take you to her."
Gabriel shot her a sharp look.
Sylvia ignored him. "Come with us," she told the man.
"Thank you! Thank you both so much!" he exclaimed, his blue eyes shining with joy as he profusely thanked Sylvia.
She smiled and nodded, then took Gabriel by the wrist and led him toward the car.
"You don't know anything about him, and you're just going to bring him back with us?" Gabriel muttered, his face grim as he glanced back at the man following them.
"And then I'd have to spend the rest of my life harboring a criminal," he retorted dryly.
Sylvia slowly turned her head, staring at him in disbelief.
By then, they had reached the car. The pharmacist, who had helped them carry the boxes, waved goodbye and left. Gabriel ignored Sylvia's stare and got into the driver's seat. Sylvia slid into the passenger seat beside him.
Once she had her seatbelt on, she opened the bottle of gummies she was holding, picked one out, and offered it to him. "Don't be angry. You can have the first one."
He shot her a sideways glance. "Do you think I'm a child?" Trying to pacify him with a piece of candy.
"If you don't want it, I'm eating it," she said, playfully pretending to pop it into her own mouth. The mischievous look on her face finally broke through his stern facade. He chuckled, snatched the gummy from her fingers, and tossed it into his mouth.
A sweet, fruity flavor spread across his tongue, a warmth seeping down into his chest.
