She stopped a few feet away from him. Perhaps it was the wine, but her eyes shimmered like autumn water, and her lips were a vibrant red against her pale skin. Her voice was laced with a faint, aggrieved tone. “Why didn’t you text me back again?”
Xavier should have left in the afternoon, but he hadn’t.
After what happened to Yvonne, he had been a little worried. Now, seeing the wine-stain on her lips, he couldn’t help but frown. “If you can’t handle your liquor, don’t drink. No one here would dare force you.”
Norah’s eyes curved into a smile. “I wanted to.”
“Did you not see what happened to Yvonne?” the man reprimanded coldly.
“I did!” Norah’s eyes suddenly lit up. “It was so satisfying!”
After overhearing Yvonne and Hannah earlier, Norah had been worried Yvonne would stir up more trouble. She had even considered warning Jonathan. She never expected Yvonne to get involved with a director instead. Now, Yvonne probably wouldn’t have the face to show up for the next few days.
Xavier’s brow remained furrowed. “Is that what you think my point was?”
Norah blinked. “Then what were you trying to say?”
Xavier glanced at his watch. “You don’t need to entertain the guests. Go back to your room and rest.”
“I won’t be able to sleep if I go back. I’ll just keep thinking about a certain someone,” Norah said, her eyes half-lowered, her voice husky, as if hovering on the edge of drunkenness.
Xavier’s dark eyes deepened, and his tone softened. “Go on back. You have to get up early for C City tomorrow.”
“No,” Norah said, looking up. The lights above reflected in her eyes, making them sparkle like stars. “Not unless you walk me to my room.”
“No,” Xavier refused flatly.
“Then don’t worry about me. You can go. I’m in my own home, nothing will happen to me!” Norah said, a little defiantly. She turned to get another drink.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed her arm. She turned back, biting her lip, her expression a mix of innocence and provocation.
Xavier looked somewhat helpless. “I’ll walk you to your door.”
“Then I’ll have to introduce you to someone sometime.” Janice’s gaze was full of concern. “When your mother was alive, our families were much closer. It’s such a shame she passed so young.”
“Mom!” Norah interrupted. “He’s here to celebrate, and you’re trying to set him up and then bringing up painful memories. Have you had too much to drink?”
Janice shot her a look. “It’s not often I get to see Gonzalez. Can’t I chat with him?”
After saying that, her smile faded slightly. Her eyes swept over the two of them. “Why are you two together?”
Xavier glanced at Norah, about to make up an excuse, when a clear, cool voice called out from nearby. “Gonzalez!”
All three turned to see Henson walking toward them.
At thirteen, Henson was already nearly five-foot-nine, with a handsome, composed bearing. He looked at Janice and said, “Mom, I asked Gonzalez to teach me how to shoot. I was afraid he wouldn’t know where my room was, so I asked my sister to bring him upstairs.”
Janice’s face cleared with understanding. “Well, don’t play for too long. Don’t keep Gonzalez from his rest.”
