Gabriel and Georgia chatted idly, but his eyes remained fixed on Sylvia and her group.
As he watched her down one glass after another, his brow furrowed deeper.
A moment later, he stood up. "She looks like she's had too much. I'm going to check on her."
Georgia glanced at her watch and nodded. "It's getting late. I should be heading back to rest anyway. You take care of Sylvia."
"I will."
Gabriel gave a slight nod and strode toward Sean and the others.
Sylvia was holding a glass of wine, listening to Sean's animated stories about their adventures in Silver Valley. She didn't notice the man until he was standing behind her, taking the glass from her hand and setting it on the table. Only then did she turn around.
A soft smile touched her lips. "Mr. Carnes, would you like to join us for a drink?"
One look at her and Gabriel knew she was drunk.
When she was drunk, her eyes held a particularly docile look.
He glanced at Sean, Bruce, and the others, his voice low and deliberate. "Did you really get her drunk?"
Sean immediately sensed the anger in his tone. With his handsome face, he narrowed his eyes, feigning innocence. "No, of course not. Everyone's just really happy, so we might have had a couple more than planned."
He even swayed a little, pretending to be drunk himself.
Sylvia tugged on the corner of Gabriel's jacket. "No one forced me. Don't be mad. Sit down, let's have a drink."
Gabriel's eyes shifted to Bruce, who immediately straightened up. "Ms. Jarvis, you and Gabriel should chat. We're all drunk, so we're going to head out now."
He shot a meaningful look at Bert and the others. The group got the message and, before Gabriel could unleash his temper, they all made a quick escape. Sean was the fastest.
In an instant, only Gabriel and Sylvia were left.
Sylvia frowned. "Why did everyone leave as soon as you showed up?"
"Because it's time for bed," Gabriel said. "We should be going back, too."
Sylvia looked around and said earnestly, "But everyone else is still having fun."
Sylvia was just saying whatever came to mind. "Nightingale's daughter is so cute."
"She is. Her name is Hedya. Nightingale adopted her a couple of years ago. Sean gave her the name."
"Her eyes are beautiful."
"Do you like her?" Gabriel asked. "If you do, we can have one of our own."
Sylvia shook her head. "No."
"Why not?"
Sylvia turned her face to rest it fully on his shoulder. Her lips were almost touching his neck, and the flickering light of the fireworks danced in her beautiful eyes, making them shimmer.
She said slowly, "I don't want a daughter. I don't want her to be abandoned all the time, like me."
Gabriel's steps faltered for a second before he continued walking. The arm holding her tightened, and his voice softened. "You have never been abandoned. And our daughter won't be, either."
Sylvia lifted her head slightly and looked around, her lovely eyes filled with confusion. "Our daughter? Where is she?"
