Chapter 20

It’s been three weeks since the night of the party. Three weeks since we’ve all become friends and hang out together all the time. I literally can’t get away from them, but at this point I don’t think I want to. Even Liam’s been hanging out with us. Which I can’t decide if I like or not. He reminds me of when we were kids, when everything wasn’t so fucked up. When he isn’t being a jerk, he reminds me of the kid I once knew. The kid I was once spent every waking second with. It’s hard to draw the line between who we were and who we are, when he’s nice to me again. It’s all so hard to figure out. Should I just forget about everything that has happened to me over the years, because they’re nice to me now? Should I just let go of this grudge, that likes to remind me of all the bad times? I’m not so sure I even have the choice anymore.

Cole always brings laughter with him, everywhere he goes. Walker has that silent but loyal way about him. If this is all real, I don’t think he’d ever let anyone hurt me. Dallas. Dallas brought me friendship when I didn’t even realize I needed it. He’s brought light back into my life, when I didn’t even realize it was dark. His smile when he sees me, just brightens my whole day. They’ve all become important to me in a matter of weeks. I feel like I’m past the point of feeling stupid if it all hits the fan. Now, I’m to the point that if it all hits the fan, I’ll be heartbroken.

I haven’t had any bullying issues since we’ve all became friends either. Maybe the next year and a half won’t be so bad after all, or maybe I’ve just set myself up for huge disappointment.

Dallas gave me another ride to school today, but instead of hanging out with them by the car I decided to head inside, to my locker. I finally finish pulling all my books from my locker to turn around to a very excited Mia running towards me. She has a fist full of balloons attached to what looks like a present. I smile seeing her rush towards me. “Happy seventeenth birthday!” She yells way too loudly. I haven’t been friends with Dallas and the guys for long, but I’m scared to see how they will treat me knowing it’s my birthday.

“What!” I hear Dallas from down the hall. Fuck. I glare at Mia, and she gives me an apologetic look. “Aims! It’s your birthday! Why didn’t you tell us?” Cole exclaims, as they get closer. Before I can answer Dallas has me picked up spinning me around. “Happy birthday, Aims!” He yells. I laugh and just let him finish, I can’t get out of his grasp if I tried anyway. Trust me I’ve tried, it’s always a losing battle.

He finally sets me down, “I didn’t tell you, because it’s not a big deal. It’s only seventeen.” Not eighteen, not when I can finally leave as soon as I have a diploma in my hands. “Well, regardless of what you think.” He stops and glares at me. “I’m always down to celebrate someone I care about!” Dallas finishes. “Yep! Now we know, Aims! What about a party?” Cole exclaims, I laugh. “No.” I say and close my locker. I’m not going to a party for my birthday, with a bunch of people who don’t care or know me. Cole frowns. “Fine. I’ll think of something.” I don’t bother to tell them I already have plans, I kind of need to see what Liam thinks before I invite them.

My first classes pretty much go like that. Walker hugged me tightly in second period exclaiming happy birthday to me, and when any of them saw me in the hallway between classes that was pretty much my life. I even was told happy birthday from a couple of Mia’s friends, including Kiera, with a plea to not forget about hanging out soon. Becoming friends with the ‘it’ crowd is really something. It’s crazy how many people pretend they know

me now.

I wasn’t excited about going to lunch with all of them. I’ve always been the person to put my head down and just get by, but they’re making sure I’m seen, and I’m still undecided about how I feel about it.

Once it’s time for lunch, I seriously debate on skipping it. I don’t make it two feet going the opposite way from lunch before I run into Liam. He smiles and laughs, something you don’t see on his face often. “No Amy, you know they’ll find you anyway. Might as well get it over with.” Liam laughs as he puts his arm around my
