Chapter 21

Liam sits me down and takes the seat next to me. Dallas pulls out a crown that says birthday girl with a sash the goes with it. I look at him like he’s gone crazy, “I’m not wearing those.” I say, and he smiles. “Please! For me? I want everyone to know it’s your birthday! Plus, we went through all the trouble skipping class just so we could get some things for you!” He pleads with a innocent angel look on his face. “Ugh! Fine, only for lunch though!” He seems to accept that. I roll my eyes as he places the sash and crown on me. Mia’s sitting on the other side of the table grinning from ear to ear. I smile over at her, “Hey! They’re your friends now to! This will be happening to you in a couple of months!” I yell at her and her smile falls. Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Dallas pulls out a bag with the café logo that my mom and I frequent on it. My eyes go wide, and he smiles. Don’t be too impressed I had some help with this one.” He says laughing. We settle down and separate all the food, and just talk like we don’t have a care in the world. It’s so weird being apart of something. Being apart of their world.

“You should come over to Liam’s tonight, I’ll show you how great I am at playing happy birthday on the guitar!” Dallas exclaims, and all the boys laugh. “Yeah, if she wants to lose her eardrums, I’m sure she’ll love that.” Liam laughs. I’m a little shocked for a second, because I can’t believe Liam actually just made a joke! Maybe, he’s finally getting a little more comfortable with everything. Everyone laughs as Dallas just shrugs and keeps eating his food.

“Actually, I will be at Liam’s tonight. His mom is having me over for a birthday dinner. I can’t wait to hear the guitar solo, Dals.” I say grinning at him. His eyes light up, then he glares at Liam. “You knew it was her birthday? Why didn’t you say anything?” Dallas asks, and my face goes red. I glance over at Liam, his face has a shade of red I’m not sure I’ve seen before on him. Either he’s embarrassed that he remembered and didn’t say anything, or he’s embarrassed that he didn’t remember since there’s a party at his house for it. I really don’t like being the point of conflict between Liam and Dallas though so I speak, “No Dals, he didn’t know. He doesn’t usually get invited since our falling out. Stop looking at him like that it’s not his fault. Besides, I’m sure he’ll be there now, right?” I turn and look at Liam, he smiles at me. “You want me there?” He sounds surprised. “Of course, I want you all there. You think your mom will mind adding a few plates?” I ask trying to pull us out of this tension. He smiles, “Yeah, we’ll all be there. My mom won’t mind.” He smiles as he pulls me in for a side hug. It’s so weird to see Liam like this. For so long he was the boy who hated me, and everything’s changed in the matter of weeks.

The rest of the day goes by smoothly, and in last period Cole slides a note on my desk. I smile and open it, Seriously, get some earplugs. Dallas is horrible on the guitar. I laugh and write back, He can’t possibly be worse than Mia playing the drums. I hand Cole back the paper, thinking about when we went to Coles house and Mia discovered the drums hidden under the white sheet. A instrument Cole tried and failed to learn. I hear him chuckle, write something else and throw the paper back on my desk. Oh just wait! Maybe that’s the present I’ll get you for your birthday. To save you from all our failed attempts at superstardom. Have you heard Liam sing? I laugh a little to loudly, causing the teacher to look over at me. I just put my head down, and once the teacher turns away, I look over at Cole who’s got a huge grin on his face, when the bell rings.

The end of the day is finally here, and I head out to my locker. I hear my phone chime and grab it out of my pocket.

*Hey! Can you meet me in the band room? I wanted to show you my guitar solo. I don’t need the guys to secretly record me or something.* -Dallas

I laugh out loud. The guys would definitely record it to use it against him later. I grab my crown and sash and put them both back on, figuring that it’d make him happy to see me wearing them again.

I finally get down to the band room and pull open the door. As soon as I walk through, P’m grabbed by the arm and thrown across the room. Fuck. I hit the wall, hard. I’m seeing stars and my head is exploding with pain, as someone comes up beside me and kicks me in the stomach. “Oh Amy, it’s cute you thought the guys actually cared for you.” Someone walks closer to me. “Wow, to set you up on your birthday. That must sting a little. Clara’s annoying voice rings through my ears. I hear Olive and Kylie laughing in the background. My thoughts are interrupted with a blow to the face, followed by a kick to my ribs. My body feels like everything is broken; ! can’t even stand to attempt to protect myself. “I mean, I don’t think we could make it any clearer, but no one wants you around. Stop bothering the boys and keep your hands to yourself.” Clara says as I feel a weight on my arm and my screaming follows. Well, I’m positive at least one bone is broken now. One more kick to my stomach and I hear them walking away laughing,

The room starts spinning as I try and catch my breath. It feels like I’m being stabbed every time I breathe from
