Chapter 205

We all stand together laughing and catching our breath after Nadia scored us the winning goal. “That was fun.” Nadia says and I nod my head.

better

“Yeah, you’re definitely better than what you claimed.” Aspen tells her with a smile, and I could swear it almost doesn’t look forced.

But it is. But she’s trying. That’s all I can ask for right now. For anyone to just give Nadia a fucking chance.

“I guess cheering for the players helped me a little bit.” She says and her jaw clenches shut like she didn’t mean to say that. “You were a cheerleader?” I ask her and she looks at the ground and back at me with a wide smile on her face. “Once upon a time.” She jokes and I smile at her.

Never would have guessed she was a cheerleader.

Aspen laughs, “Hopefully, you weren’t like the ones at my school. Stuck up bitches, the lot of them.” She jokes and Nadia shakes her head with a smile. “Oh, Goddess. I hope no one saw me that way.” She responds.

I sigh, now that I’m not actively distracting myself my mind starts to turn towards my mother again and where Nadia and I are going to stay.

Nadia looks over at me, like she can read my thoughts, her face turning grim. “We should go.” I tell Nadia and then look at the group.

“We’ll be here tomorrow, if you guys want to join.” Finn says excitedly and I give him a noncommittal nod, then grab ahold of Nadia’s hand.

We say our good-byes as Aspen stares at me like she wants to say something, but I’m not going to force it out of her. Not right now. I have to much going on.

I feel her stare on the back of my head, like it’s a living breathing thing, but I don’t turn around, I just keep dragging Nadia to where we’re going.

I knock on the door, and it takes a second before the door creaks open and my grandma’s bright face lights up

the entryway.

“Griffon! Nadia!” She says excitedly, then pulls us into the house and into the living room where Nadia and I sit

next to each other on the couch.

Grandpa looks up from his newspaper and smiles. “Hey, son. What a surprise.” Grandpa chuckles, and I give him a small smile, before looking between my grandparents.

“I was wondering if we could stay here a few days?” I ask them and they look at me like I’m crazy.

“What’s going on, boy? Everything okay?” John asks and I shake my head.

“Mom and I… We just aren’t seeing eye to eye right now.” I answer and as if Julia can sense it, her glance turns to Nadia. “What happened?” She asks and I shake my head, before I tell them how crazy my mom has been acting towards Nadia.

Once I finish, they both look at each other. Probably talking through their mind-links. The Grandma looks at me sadly, then at Nadia.
