Chapter 24

I wake up, I don’t even know how much later. My body feels like I got hit by a bus. I’m having trouble seeing from the obvious black eye, but I’m at least able to get myself into a seated position up against the wall. I pull out my phone with the left arm that still works, every muscle I move, makes me feel like I’m dying. It’s nearly six o’clock, my mom’s going to start wondering where I am if she isn’t already. I pull up my messages.

*Hey, I lost my phone. It’s Dallas. You better not have walked home on your birthday! Where are you?* -Dallas

*Hey, seriously where are you? Everybody’s getting worried.* – Dallas

*Your mom doesn’t know where you are. Can you please answer someone?* -Dallas

This is all Dallas’s fault. Why would he still be pretending to care so much when he knows exactly where I am? This hurts more than I thought it would, I really started trusting them. I scroll down to Mia’s name, I see that the rest of the guys have messaged me too, but I don’t care what they have to say. I read Mia’s last text to me.

*Call me! You have us worried! Why aren’t you answering anybody?* -Mia

I push the call button, and it starts ringing. She answers on the second ring. “Where are you, Aims? Are you okay?” She says quickly. “Don’t call me that, Mia. Can you come to the school to help me. Don’t bring anyone else! Just you.” I plead with her. I hear her leave the loud room she’s in and go to another. “Yeah… Okay… I’m not sure how I’ll get out without one of the guys following me. They’re all really worried about you.” She explains, and I laugh humorlessly. “Please, Mia.” I can hear the pain in my own voice, as the tears start making their way down my cheeks. “Okay, I’ll figure something out.” She responds quickly, probably sensing my tears and knowing I rarely cry. “Thank you. I’m in the band room, I don’t think I’ll be able to get out of here by myself.” I say knowing that’ll worry her more, but knowing I can’t get up by myself. I hear her car door shut. “Okay Amy, I’m on my way. I’ll be there in five minutes.” I say okay and hang up the phone.

I inspect my body while I wait. Broken arm, broken ribs, and at least a concussion. I can feel the bruises already forming throughout my torso. Were they trying to kill me? Or did they just not realize how much force they were putting behind their punches and kicks. I know I heard the she devils, but other then the broken arm, it was someone else beating me. I wish I would have gotten a good look before I was thrown across the room. The way Clara’s voice was coming at me though, there’s no way she was the one doing the beating, she was to far away. Or maybe my brain was too fuzzy to have heard anything correctly. Is there a fourth person I need to be on the look out for?

I lay my head back against the wall, earning a sharp pain that radiates through my whole body. My body starts to relax and I feel myself starting to lose consciousness again.

I hear the band door open, not sure how much time has passed. I look up quickly, readying myself for another attack. I wouldn’t be able to do anything other than be prepared but I thank the Goddess that it’s Mia. I see her face when she looks at me. I knew I looked bad but this just confirms it. She races over to me, “Dear Goddess, what happened to you?” She’s already crying just by looking at me. “I don’t want to talk about it. Can you just take me to the hospital? I’m pretty sure my arms broken.” I say quickly with some difficultly, I wouldn’t normally go to the hospital, but I know I’ll need a cast for my arm. My mom is going to have to be privy to this round of beatings. Great. She nods and slowly starts helping me stand. The screams of pain have Mia wincing every time she touches me. She’s scared to touch me in the wrong place, but we are finally able to get me to the

car.

As we’re driving to the hospital, Mia starts asking me questions, but I can’t answer any of them. My head feels
