Chapter 241

I feel like getting out of the actual cell portion of the fortress will be the hardest part, but I stick to the shadows. Slinking my back against the wall and trying my best to go unseen, and unheard.
Auntie always told us stories about her times at school, and she said as long as she could get hidden, they couldn’t find her. I just have to stay hidden.
I get closer to the entrance and look around the door at the guard sitting there in his chair.
Sleeping.
I nearly laugh, I guess Griffon doesn’t hold as tight a shift as he’d like to think. Goddess, I hope I don’t get caught. Griffon’s proven he doesn’t want to hurt me, after leaving my almost killing him going mostly unpunished, but that won’t save this man.
I grit my teeth and strengthen my resolve; I have to do this. This is important. Hazel and her family need to get out of here.
I slip by the guard easily and head down the nearest hallway, staying clear of where I know Griffon’s room is and trying to scent Cole or the twins.
I feel like I’ve been searching forever, ducking behind corners and plants anytime I think I hear something.
Finally, I get to a hallway with what looks like four rooms. Why is this place so big? Griffon hates the world, but builds a place big enough to house them all? But maybe this is why. Turning corners and getting lost, not being able to find your way out. It’s a strategy, one I’m really not appreciating right now.
The door at the end of the hallway opens and Cole’s standing there wide eyed and shaking his head. “Hurry and get inside!” He hisses, rushing me, and I run into the room.
He slams the door behind me and curses, “Fuck, Aspen. I could smell you from down the hall! What are you thinking?” He asks angrily.
He looks at my arm and curses yet again, “What happened?” He asks, moving to the kitchen, grabbing a rag from a drawer and starting to wet it.
Finn and Randy poke their heads out of where I assume is their bedroom and then walk further inside the living room. I look over at Cole as he comes closer with the rag and shake my head.
“No. I won’t be able to explain how the cut got cleaned. It can’t be cleaned, and I don’t want my scent in here. Not touching anything but my feet to the ground.
