Chapter 281
My eyes shoot open, and I’m staring directly into Griffon’s. His worried gaze traveling over my features. “What happened? Are you okay?” He asks quickly.
I slowly sit up, and he starts to pull his body away from mine, but I cling to him. Needing his strength for a moment after what I just saw.
I’d be a fool to believe what just happened was coincidence, but I also don’t want to believe that was real. I don’t want to believe that’s going to happen.
My eyes find his worried ones again as I sit in his arms, “We need to work faster.” I tell him, then finally stand up, and leave the room that Cam, Lenny and I were searching.
They all follow me out, as I start searching desperately around the house. Trying to get any feeling I can.
“What did you see?” Griffon asks, his voice taking a hinge of fear. I don’t know if it’s from me passing out, or if he’s scared about what I saw, but I don’t care right now.
I keep searching, opening drawers, and moving couch cushions, but I don’t feel anything. I don’t sense anything. Please Goddess! You clearly want me to stop this, help me!
I shout up at the Goddess, my head tilting towards the sky.
Griffon walks up behind me, his body heat seeping into me, and calming down the worst of the crazy. I take slow deep breaths as my head falls from the ceiling and lands on the window.
It’s just a house. There are kids playing across the street. She just lived like a normal person inside Kirksville. Did they know she was crazy? Did they know she wants to destroy the world?
Griffon’s hands both land on the side of my arms and he squeezes me gently. “What did you see, Aspen?” He whispers and an unwarranted sob leaves me, before I answer. “The end… I saw the end of everything and everyone.” I whisper, my head falling into my hands.
Wanting to cover up the tears that leave my eyes. I hate showing weakness. I’m definitely not known for it.
Griffon turns me around and pulls me into his chest. Squeezing me tightly and I swear I can feel the bond taking pieces of my pain and handing them over to him.
It’s not even a full bond yet, but it feels like home. More so than I think I’ve ever felt. “Keep searching.” Griffon orders the rest of the group but makes no move to leave me in my own misery.
“We’ll figure this out.” He whispers into my hair, his hand moving to my spine and stroking up and down slowly. We just stand there like that until my erratic breathing calms and the tears stop coming.
