Chapter 325
I throw the book on the table in front of Hazel. She looks up at me confused, “Where’d you find this?” She asks me, and I look over my shoulder at Griffon.
Hazel always seems a little more tense when he’s in the room, but she hides it well. “We found it in the trailer. Can you read it?” I ask her, she shakes her head and goes back to the book in front of her.
“No one can. I’ve asked everyone I know. No one can read the language. It’s like it was written in code.” My blood runs cold, why am I the only one who can read this?
“Aspen can.” Griffon states, his voice devoid of any emotion, like he doesn’t want me to sense how scared he is about that. But I can feel it in his tense stance and how his body is shaking ever so slightly.
Hazel’s head snaps up and her eyes bleed into mine. “You can?” I nod. She looks back at the book. “I don’t even remember how this book got into my shop, but Amy grabbed it when we were leaving to run. I don’t even know if she thought it was important. We just grabbed what we could and took off, but she was obsessed with finding someone to read it. She sat on the couch in the trailer for hours a day trying to decipher anything from it. I don’t think she gave up on that book until we got back to the pack and defeated the moon man.” She explains and I look over at her, “So, what does it mean that I can read it? It looks like perfect English to me.”
She looks between the book and me for several minutes before answering. “English?” She asks, and I nod. Her jaw ticks. “What does it say?” She asks. “I haven’t read all of it, but I’m pretty sure it’s the witch’s diary.” I tell her and her eyes close, and she swings her head to look down at the table before finally looking back at me, “I can only think of two things that might mean.” She starts, and I urge her to continue. “One, you’re connected to the witch in someway. Whether blood or soul, I don’t know.”
