Chapter 335
I hold onto her like my life depends on it.
I almost died… Actually died. And looking around the room, I’m starting to understand why.
“Why the hell would you put yourself at risk like that? Do you know how your mother would have taken it had you died? Why would you risk it?” My dad shouts at me as I pull myself off the table to see everything better.
Finn, Randy and Cole are all making sure Hazel is okay, while Walker and Mia check on my mother with Dallas glued to her side.
I look at my dad, “I’m sorry.” I rasp, the first words coming off a little harsh. I pull Aspen tighter, but she pulls away. “He did it for me. He did it so I didn’t have to.” She tells him, gripping my hand tightly. Dad looks between us, the anger still clear as day.
He groans, his hand running down his face in frustration, “Tell me it at least worked. Did
you find anything out?” He asks, and my jaw ticks.
He closes his eyes, gripping my shoulder, then starting to walk away. I stop him, “Grandma told me to tell you that you may not be able to save her from this, but you’ve saved her in so many other ways.” I whisper and I hear him swallow roughly, refusing to look back at me.
“Your grandma was always an optimist. You know what it got her?” He says, finally turning around to glare at me.
I take a deep breath, “Dad.” I start, he shakes his head, leaving the rest for me to understand, and walks away.
Dad turns away from Aspen, walks over to mom picking her up and walking out of the room.
I look over at Aspen and she looks at me. “It was beautiful, wasn’t it?” She asks, her face taking a softer frame than normal. I nod, “It was, but it wasn’t here. It wasn’t with you. I’m starting to see why my mom’s all over the place with wanting to go there. She’d be fine there, but it wouldn’t be here with dad with… All of us.’
She smiles, then nods like she understands exactly how I’m feeling. “Sorry, if I pissed off your dad.” She smirks, and I know she’s not really sorry. I scoff, “You didn’t piss him off, you made him see it from more than the self loathing position he’s taken it in.”
She swallows roughly then turns towards Hazel. Hazel’s eyes soften as she looks between us, but then they harden back on me. “Did you figure anything out?” She asks, and I sigh, “No. Heather told me they can’t help us.
Hazel shakes her head, “That’s not possible. If they knew anything Heather would have told us in order to save her daughter. Maybe she told you something, just not directly. What did she say?” She asks, and I purse my lips, “She talked a lot about horses.”
