Chapter 99

I don’t really know what to do. I’ve never even been inside of a bar before. In the pack, they allow you to start drinking at sixteen, because it takes a lot to get wolves drunk. I’m not sure what the human rules are. “Hey, sweetie. What can I get for you?” Says an older lady as she walks closer to me. She’s about five two, has long gray hair reaching her lower back and dark blue eyes.
I stare at her, still not sure what I should be doing, “I’ll just have a water, please.” She smiles sweetly and goes to get my water. When she comes back, setting down the water, she leans onto the counter in front of me. “I’ve seen that look before.” She says, and I look at her confused. She looks at me kindly, “You look lost, sweetie. Look, I don’t ask questions. I pay under the table, and I even have a room upstairs you can stay until you get back on your feet.” I look at her shocked. Did she just offer me a job and a place to stay?
“You’re giving me a job?” I ask, shocked. Her smile becoming more and more warming. “Yes, dear. Come on I’ll show you to your room. You can start working tonight.” I look at her sadly, “I’ve never had a job before.” I say, thinking that may make her change her mind. I don’t want to hurt someone who’s so willing to help me. She looks over at me, “Like I said sweetie, I don’t ask questions.” Then she starts walking up the stairs to the side of the bar, as I follow her.
I start my shift later that night, I don’t know how long I can stay here, but maybe I’ll just stay awhile to raise a little extra cash, before I have to move on. She explains my job, which at the moment is just bringing customers their drinks and keeping the tables and bar clean.
So far, this job is pretty simple. I’ve only dropped a couple drinks and luckily it wasn’t on any of the customers. I keep feeling eyes on me though, hopefully I’m just being paranoid. Right as I think that, while cleaning the bar, someone’s voice rings behind me. “Hey cutie, can I get a drink?” A man on the other side of the bar says, I look up and he’s looking at me. He has dyed red hair, probably close to my age and hazel eyes. “Oh sorry, I don’t make drinks. She’ll be right back.” I say nicely, with a smile on my face. I continue cleaning the bar, when he speaks again. “What’s your name?” He asks, I look over not wanting to be rude, but also hoping he’s not talking to me. I’m not so lucky. “Oh, I’m A…” I probably shouldn’t be using my real name. “My names Amber.” I say smiling. He smiles, “And what is a pretty thing like you doing working in a place like this?” He asks, I wonder if he realizes that’s pretty offensive.
“Nick stop harassing my new waitress. What can I get for you?” Jessica says as she comes around the bar. I let out a sigh of relief. I really need to get more of a backbone if I’m going to work here. His comments weren’t terrible, just made me uncomfortable. I feel like that’s something I’m going to have to get used to. “Hey, I’m not harassing her, I’m just getting to know her.” He says, causing Jessica to roll her eyes. I take a deep breath; this is my new life for the moment.
