Valerie’s head snapped to the side from the force of the hit, her pale skin flushing instantly as a red mark spread across her cheek.

She turned back slowly, shock written all over her face. “Why did you hit me?”

I hadn’t expected that either. The moment hung strangely, like even the room itself hadn’t caught up.

“Apologize,” Damian said, his voice low and steady, leaving no room for resistance. “You caused this. Don’t drag the Flores family down with you.”

Valerie stared at him, her body trembling despite herself.

For a moment, she didn’t move. Then she turned toward me, clearly unwilling. “Nira… I’m sorry.”

Before I could respond, Kade spoke from beside me, his tone calm but unyielding. “That didn’t sound like an apology.”

The shift in pressure was immediate.

Valerie flinched, the fear in her eyes no longer hidden, and after a brief hesitation, she stepped closer. Under everyone’s watch, she bent forward slowly, lowering herself into a full, formal bow.

Her hands clenched tightly at her sides, her fingers whitening with tension as strands of hair fell forward, hiding most of her expression.

“Nira,” she said, each word forced out with effort, “I’m sorry for what I did. I was wrong. Please forgive me.”

I let the silence stretch for a moment before answering. “If you understand that you were wrong, then we’ll leave it at that.”

Then I met her eyes, my voice cooling. “But remember this. If there’s a next time, the Flores family won’t be able to protect you.”

She looked at me, resentment barely concealed, and somewhere in the crowd, a quiet laugh slipped out.

That assumption didn’t bother me.

He stepped forward then, his gaze settling on me with a level of caution that hadn’t been there before. “Miss Soren, what happened today was due to my failure to manage my family. I apologize. I hope you’ll allow me the chance to make it up to you.”

Before I could answer, Kade shifted slightly, placing himself just enough in front of me to block the line between us. “If you have time to spare, focus on your own family,” he said flatly! “My fiancée isn’t your responsibility.”

Then he turned his head toward me, his voice softening. “Want me to take you back?”

I nodded. “Yeah.”

We left together without another word.

Valerie’s POV:

Watching Nira walk away beside Kade, completely composed, like none of this had touched her, something twisted violently in my chest.

The anger came fast and suffocating.

My hands curled into fists as I forced myself not to shift right there and tear her apart.

Then something else caught my attention.

Damian.

He was still watching her.

Not casually, not in passing, but intently, his gaze fixed on her retreating figure in a way I had never seen before.

“Stay here tonight,” he continued, straightening as he looked down at me. “Think carefully about what you’ve done.”

His tone dropped further, turning almost quiet. “And if you still don’t understand… I don’t mind sending you to join them.”

The moment he said it, a cold wave of fear washed over me.

Images I had tried for years to forget surfaced all at once, the way our parents died, the way everything changed after that, the way he took control without hesitation.
