Chapter 124 Breakfast

The next morning, I woke up to the smell of food.
I rubbed my eyes and stepped out of my room, still half asleep, and stopped short when I saw Kade in the kitchen, wearing an apron like it was the most normal thing in the world.
The quiet clatter of pans and utensils filled the space, blending into the morning in a way that felt oddly… natur
I stared at him for a second before I finally spoke. “Wait… are you actually cooking?”
I leaned against the wall, still trying to process it. The alpha king heir, in my kitchen, making breakfast like this was part of his routine.
If Lyra hadn’t already picked up his scent, I would’ve seriously questioned my sanity.
Kade glanced back and smiled, easy and relaxed. “Morning. Figured I’d make breakfast, since you let me crash here.”
I walked over to the table and looked down at the plate in front of me. Fresh sandwiches, still warm, the smell alone enough to make it clear this wasn’t some half–hearted attempt.
sat down and took a bite.
And yeah, that caught me off guard.
I looked up at him, genuinely impressed. “Okay, that’s actually really good. Like… way better than I expected. You’ve been holding out on this?”
He sat across from me, letting out a quiet laugh as he watched my reaction, something softer settling into his expression that didn’t quite match the version of him most people saw.
I looked away and focused on eating before I got distracted.
Cooking had never been my thing.
Back at Silvermoon Pack, everything was handled for me. After I returned to the Soren estate, nothing really changed. If I wasn’t eating at home, I was ordering takeout or grabbing something outside.
The kitchen here had basically been decorative until now.
I took another bite, then glanced at him. “Seriously though, how does that even happen? You’re the alpha king heir. Since when do you cook like this?”
For a brief second, something flickered in his expression. His hand tightened slightly against the table before he relaxed again.

He looked down, fingers tracing the rim of his glass like he was sorting through something before answering.
“No one really took care of me when I was younger,” he said finally, his voice quieter than before. “So I figured it out myself. Had to eat somehow.”
That wasn’t the answer I expected.
“At first it was terrible,” he added with a faint smile. Too much salt, undercooked food, all of it. But you keep doing it, you get better.”
I listened, something in my chest tightening without warning.
“You’re the heir,” I said slowly. “How does that even happen?”
He let out a short, humorless laugh. “Yeah, I am. Doesn’t mean much behind closed doors. The Howell family looks perfect from the outside, but it’s a mess underneath.”
He stopped there.
I didn’t push.
Some things don’t need to be dragged out if someone isn’t ready to say them.

I found myself thinking about Colt, the Howell family’s adopted son. From what I’d heard, Edith treated him like he was her own, no different from a biological child, and somehow that made it worse.
They grew up under the same roof, in the same family, and yet Kade had been practically invisible, like no one ever really saw him, while Colt had all of Edith’s attention, all of her care, like he was the one who truly belonged.
Back at the Soren estate, Janice had always been the one they cared about, the one they protected, while I was treated like I didn’t matter, all because I had “lost” my wolf.
I lowered my gaze, my fingers brushing absently against the edge of my cup. “Kade… I get it.”
He looked up.
I met his eyes and gave a small, tired smile. “We’re not that different. You were invisible in the Howell estate. In mine…” I let out a quiet breath. “They would’ve been fine if I disappeared.”
The weight of it lingered for a second, but it didn’t stay.
Thinking about everything I had been through, everything that got me here, something steadier replaced it.
I looked back at him, my tone shifting. “Doesn’t matter, though. The ones they overlooked turned out just fine.
One day, I’m going to make them regret it.”
