Briar finished the treatment and straightened up. “The wound’s been handled, and the toxin’s cleared. She’ll need rest. I’ll leave medication to prevent infection and manage the fever. Since she doesn’t have a wolf spirit protecting her, there’s a good chance she’ll run a fever tonight, so keep an eye on her.”

“Got it. Thanks,” I said quietly.

He gave my shoulder a brief pat. “She’s out of danger.“”

I nodded, but my attention never left her.

Jett stepped out with Briar to pick up the medication, leaving just the two of us in the room.

Outside, the light was starting to fade, the last stretch of sunset slipping through the curtains and casting a soft, golden glow across everything.

I reached out and brushed my fingers gently along Nira’s cheek. Her skin was pale, drained of color, a few loose strands of hair clinging to her forehead, making her look far more fragile than she ever allowed anyone to see.

The sight of her like this hit harder than I expected, guilt and something heavier settling deep in my chest. “Mr. Howell, you should eat something and get some rest,” he said. “I can stay and watch Miss Soren.”

“I’ll eat later,” I replied without moving. “Leave it.”

He hesitated, then nodded. “I’ll go track down the people behind this.”

“Do it.”

Once he left, the room fell silent. I stayed where I was. Time passed without meaning.

Sometime after midnight, the shift was subtle but immediate.

Her breathing changed first, becoming uneven, then faster, like something was putting her deeper into it.

Sweat gathered along her forehead, her face pale under the low light, her brows drawn tight as if she was trapped somewhere she couldn’t escape.

I reached out and pressed my hand against her forehead.

“Nira,” I called quietly, trying to bring her back.

There was no response.
