Felicia let out a sharp laugh, the kind that carried more threat than humor, and fixed me with a look that made it clear she thought she had already sized me up. “Wow, look at you.

think having Kade in your corner makes you untouchable now?”
She stepped closer, her voice dropping but somehow cutting deeper. “Let me make one thing very clear. Out of respect for Mr. Howell, I’m not going to shift and tear you apart right here, but during this selection, as long as I’m in it, you’re not making it through. Not a chance.”
Her eyes hardened, the hostility no longer masked. “You picked the wrong person to mess with, and I’m going to make sure you regret it.”
I didn’t give her what she wanted. I just picked up my bag and slung it over my shoulder, my tone flat, almost bored. “Alright. I’ll be right here when you try.”
I walked past her without another glance.
Felicia completely lost it at the way Nira carried herself, that unbothered, above-it-all attitude pushing her straight over the edge.
“Kieran, you might want to be careful,” she said, her tone shifting into something more calculated. “She’s backed by Kade. For all we know, her spot’s already secured before this even starts.”
Kieran adjusted his glasses, his gaze following my back as I walked away. He had always been the kind of person who believed skill was everything, and connections were nothing but shortcuts for people who couldn’t compete on their own.
He let out a quiet scoff. “Connections don’t win competitions. If/she’s in my way, I’ll take her out like anyone else.”
Felicia’s lips curved slightly at that, satisfaction flickering across her face as she got exactly the reaction she wanted.
The next morning, the Shadowgrid Squad selection officially began.
The process was split into two stages, an online assessment followed by ani-person evaluation. The online portion tested fundamentals, vulnerability analysis, reverse engineering, and both offensive and defensive cybersecurity skills, while the in-

Nira got there early on the first day, logged into the system, and settled in front of the screen.
By coincidence, Felicia and Kieran were assigned to the same room, seated just behind Nira.
Once the test started, everything else faded out. Nira’s fingers moved steadily across the keyboard as she worked through each problem, one after another, without hesitation.
Time slipped by, but Nira never broke rhythm.
At some point, Kieran glanced up and caught sight of her screen, and the movement in his posture gave away his reaction before he even said anything. “How is she moving that fast?”
There was confusion in his voice, but also something sharper, something that didn’t quite sit right with him. “She doesn’t even have a wolf spirit. Her processing speed should be below a low-tier Omega. So what exactly am I looking at right now?”

He didn’t get an answer.
Instead, he forced himself back into the test, picking up his own pace, trying to close the gap.

ho was that girl who left early?”
“Yeah, seriously, what pack is she from?”
“She finished in half the time. That’s insane.”
“If she’s that strong, she’s probably taking first. Maybe we should start getting on her good side now.”
Felicia heard every word, and her expression darkened with each one.
She let out a cold laugh and raised her voice just enough to cut through the chatter. “You guys are giving her way too much credit. Her name’s Nira. She doesn’t even have a wolf spirit. The only reason she’s here is because of Kade.”
She folded her arms, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Finished that fast? Please. She obviously got the questions ahead of time. There’s no way anyone does that legit.”
That shifted the atmosphere instantly.
“You’re saying she cheated?”
“That would explain it. No wonder she was so fast.”
“People like that shouldn’t even be here. That’s just pathetic.”
The accusations started building, but not everyone bought into it.
Someone near the back asked, quieter but steady, “Is that even possible? Can Shadowgrid Squad tests really be leaked?”
Felicia seized on the hesitation, her confidence growing. “Of course. Otherwise, how do you explain it? She’s only here because of connections. Her skills aren’t real.”
