I narrowed my eyes against the glare of the headlights and looked toward the street just as a black sedan eased to a stop along the curb. The window slid down, and Kade’s face came into view, sharp and composed as ever.

“Get in,” he said, his voice low and calm, but there was an edge to it, the kind of quiet authority that made it clear he wasn’t really asking.

I hesitated for a brief second before opening the door and getting into the passenger seat.

The moment I settled in, his scent filled the space around me, subtle but unmistakable. Lyra stirred again, restless in a way that had been happening more often lately whenever he was close. The reaction unsettled me more than I wanted to admit.

I hadn’t reached my eighteenth birthday yet, and without that full moon, there was no way to confirm who my destined mate was supposed to be. Still, a thought had started to take shape in the back of my mind, one I couldn’t quite shake.

What if it was him?

I pushed it down before it could go any further.

“You’re still here?” I asked, turning slightly toward him.

Kade glanced over, the corner of his lips lifting into that familiar, easy smile. “I was waiting for you.”

For a moment, I didn’t know how to respond.

That smile again.

He let out a quiet chuckle and started the car. “Come on, I’ll get you something to eat.”

I was already hungry, so I didn’t argue.

The car pulled up in front of an upscale restaurant not long after. Kade stepped out first, then walked around and opened my door himself. I paused for a second before stepping out.

“Thanks.”

Inside, the lighting was warm and soft, the kind of place where everything felt polished without trying too hard. The staff clearly recognized Kade the moment he walked in. One of them came over right away and led us to a table by the window.

Once we sat down, he handed me the menu. “Take your time.”

I skimmed through it and picked a few things I liked. Kade added a couple of the restaurant’s signature dishes without much thought.

I liked seafood, but I usually avoided ordering it because I didn’t want to deal with the mess, especially shrimp and crab. So when those dishes showed up, I assumed they were for him and didn’t reach for them.

Kade didn’t say anything at first. He just pulled the shrimp dish closer, picked one up, and started peeling it with steady, practiced

movements.

His hands were precise, antroffed, the kind of hands that made even something simple look deliberate. The shell came off cleanly, the meat intact, and he placed it onto a small plate before sliding it over to me.

“Go ahead,” he said, his tone easy, almost absentminded, like this was the most natural thing in the world.

I stared at the plate for a second, genuinely caught off guard.

The first heir of an Alpha King bloodline was sitting across from me, peeling shrimp like it was nothing.

I didn’t say anything about it. I just picked one up and ate it.

“Thanks,” I said quietly.

That was when it hit me, he had done this before. The last time we had dinner with his team, he had done the exact same thing

Maybe he just saw me as someone younger, someone he needed to look after. Or maybe it had something to do with the fact that I had helped him before, and he still felt like he owed me.

Kade didn’t explain. He just smiled faintly and moved on to the lobster, cracking it open with the same calm efficiency and setting the meat onto my plate.

When the plate in front of me was nearly full, I pushed it back toward him.

“You should eat too.”

He looked up, clearly a little surprised, and for a split second, something softer flickered in his eyes before it settled into a quiet

smile.

I didn’t hold his gaze. I just lowered my head and kept eating.

Kade’s POV:

After dinner, I drove Nira back to her apartment and watched her head inside before pulling away. By the time I got back to my place, it was already past ten, the house quiet as usual.
