Chapter 200 A Finger for Freedom

Nira’s POV:

I met Zach’s gaze, slowly peeling off my surgical mask. I felt a twinge of guilt as I looked at him. “Mr Barnes, I’m sorry I hid the truth from you.”

Zach shook his head gently, his expression kinder than I deserved. “Don’t worry about it. I understand. You were just protecting yourself. It’s fine.”

Then, he asked the same question that hung in the air between us before. “Nira, who taught you? Your technique… it’s extraordinary.”

I looked at Zach, my emotions churning.

My skills were a patchwork of influences. Part of what I knew came from my adoptive father. But the rest–the intuitive, instinctual part–came from someone whose identity I could never reveal.

I paused for a beat, choosing my words carefully. “Mr. Barnes, about that… I can’t say. It involves that person’s privacy.”

The light in Zach’s eyes dimmed almost instantly, but he couldn’t let it go. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a hush. “Then…. is that person still alive?”

He spoke so softly, as if he were afraid that speaking too loud might shatter the reality of it. His fingers curled into a tight fist at his side without him realizing it. His eyes were a swirling mix of hope and dread, like a man waiting for a verdict he desperately needed but was terrified to hear.

Seeing him like that made my chest ache. I hesitated, then gave him a slow, deliberate nod. “That person is doing well safe now.”

Zach’s entire frame jerked as if struck. A rush of emotion washed over his face–shock warring with an overwhelming sense of relief.

His mouth opened as if he wanted to press for a name, to demand every detail, but he ultimately stopped himself. He squeezed his eyes shut, looking overcome, and his voice came out rough and gravelly. “Good… that’s good…”

I pressed my lips into a thin line, staying silent. I didn’t know the history between Zach and that elusive figure from my past, but it wasn’t my place to expose her. Her privacy was paramount.

My adoptive father had always been a recluse, but he had never explicitly forbidden me from acknowledging him. However, because the other person was involved, my hands were tied.

Zach looked at me, his eyes intense and filled with a complicated resolve. “Nira, if you ever need anything–anything at all–just tell me. I’ve got your back. No matter what.”

I nodded fervently. “Thank you, Mr. Barnes. Truly.”

Zach waved me off, looking suddenly older and exhausted, “Don’t mention it. it’s the least I can do.”

With that, he turned on his heel and walked out of the operating room. He looked lonely, his silhouette retreating down the hallway.

I stood there for a long moment, watching him go, trying to sort through the storm of feelings inside me.

Eventually, I pulled myself together and went back into the recovery room to check on Kade’s dressings. I didn’t want to cause him any pain, so I moved with hyper–gentie precision.

“Nira…”

A familiar, raspy voice drifted from the bed. It was weak, but it was the best sound I’d heard all day.

My head snapped up, and I felt a smile break across my face. “You’re awake! How do you feel? Any pain?”

Kade looked up at me, the corners of his mouth lifting in a faint, tired smile. “I’m fine, Just a little drained.”

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding, but then I furrowed my brow. “You lost a lot of blood. The witches‘ potion blocked your wolf spirit from healing you, which made everything much more dangerous. You need to rest. No moving around for the next few days, and keep that wound elevated.”

Kade nodded, his eyes softening as they locked onto mine. “Understood. I’ll do whatever the doctor orders.”

I narrowed my eyes playfully at him. “I’m the surgeon who just put you back together, so you better listen.”

I turned to organize the medication trays on the counter, needing a second to compose myself.

“Are you… okay?” Kade’s voice, laced with worry, followed me.

My hand froze over the instruments for a split second. Then I forced a shrug. “You saw for yourself. I made it out. I’m fine.”

I started shoving supplies into the cabinets a little too aggressively to keep my hands busy. “And don’t ever do something that stupid again. You’re the heir to the Alpha King. You seriously listened to a piece of trash like Colt? He told you to cut off your own finger and you actually did it? What if he had asked for your life instead?”

When I turned back around, Kade wasn’t looking at his injuries. His deep eyes were fixed right on me, dancing with amusement as if he saw right through my act.

My face heated up instantly. Fine, maybe

Before Kade could tease me further, I dropped my gaze, feigning professional cool. “Okay, that’s enough talking. Go back to sleep.”

Kade chuckled softly, closed his eyes, and murmured, “Yes.”

Zane came tearing into the hospital wing the moment he heard the news.

When he saw Kade’s bandaged hand, he looked ready to shift and tear someone apart right there in the recovery room. “That bastard Colt. If he hadn’t died so fast, I would’ve let my wolf rip him to shreds.”

Tessa, standing beside him, frowned deeply and looked me over with anxious eyes. “Nira, did Colt hurt you? Did he touch you?”

I took the flowers she had brought and arranged them in a vase on the nightstand, stealing a quick glance at Kade as i spoke, “N It was the truth, mostly. Colt had been completely unhinged. If Kade hadn’t shown up exactly when he did, I probably wouldn’t have walked out of that room in one piece.

Tessa’s nose wrinkled in absolute disgust. “Colt was repulsive. Making Mr. Howell hurt himself like that.” She stomped her foot, her anger rising. “Dying was too easy for him. He should have suffered more.”
