“Good. Make sure they’re protected. Let them know I’m here to help them get justice for the ones they lost.”
As I said that, I clenched my fists. This was the gift I had prepared for Nolan.
Janice’s eighteenth birthday party went on as planned.
No matter how low people ranked me–someone they barely acknowledged, let alone thought worthy of being engaged to Kade Howell, the alpha king’s first heir–as long as that engagement still existed, the Soren family got to hold on to a shred of status.
So, the guest list ended up even longer than expected.
Somehow, Jenna had managed to get Colt to show up. I had no idea what strings she pulled, but she did it.
Janice, of course, stayed glued to his side, fawning all over him like she already believed he was destined to replace Kade and take the throne.
Most people seemed to agree. To them, Kade waking up didn’t mean much. Without his wolf soul back, he was still just a shell–no better than a ghost in a body.
Damon clearly shared the same thought. He was all smiles as he watched Janice cozy up to Colt.
The three Soren brothers were busy working the room, raising their glasses and basking in the attention like they already owned the place.
I kept to the corner, quietly watching the whole performance unfold.
When Jenna spotted me, she immediately ordered the staff to send me back to my room. She didn’t want me anywhere near the guests.
Which was fine. I had no interest in this party. Once I got upstairs, I settled in with a medical book, completely at ease.

The poison in Kade’s system was proving more complex than I’d hoped. My blood could help, yes, but I wasn’t looking to bleed myself dry. I needed a cleaner, safer way to purge it.
I had planned to spend the evening in peace. But of course, the moment Jenna called Janice down to play the piano, she insisted I be brought down too.
The moment I stepped into the hall, I saw Janice already seated at the grand piano, putting on her perfect show.
She glanced at me, her eyes gleaming with something calculated. Her fingers brushed the keys and music floated into the room–graceful, practiced. But her gaze stayed locked on me, daring.
The crowd was eating it up. Soft gasps, murmurs of admiration. All so easily fooled. I leaned against the staircase railing and watched quietly.
To be fair, Janice had worked hard. She’d been practicing non–stop in the music room ever since I came back. She did have some natural talent. But a future master, like the Soren family kept claiming? Not even close.
When the final note faded, the guests burst into applause. Janice rose slowly, wearing a smug, satisfied smile.
Then she turned toward me. “Nira,” she said sweetly, loud enough for everyone to hear, “it’s your birthday too. Care to play something for us?”
I didn’t get a word in before Rhett Valor–her ever–faithful admirer–jumped in with a sneer, “Pretty sure Miss Soren spent her life in some backwoods dump before crawling back here. She’s probably never even touched a piano, let alone played one.”
He chuckled and added, “Honestly, with the way she carries herself, she looks more like one of the Omega housemaids. Maybe she could give us a little demo on how to clean the floors.”
The crowd erupted in laughter. Their eyes were full of mockery as they turned toward me.
Inside me, Lyra howled. I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my palms, sharp enough to hurt. Pain was the only thing keeping me grounded, holding Lyra back from tearing the place apart.
Damon’s face went rigid with rage. He turned to Jenna and hissed, “Didn’t I tell you to keep her out of sight?”
