Nira’s POV:

I glanced at Janice’s smug expression and looked away, unimpressed.

I was just about to respond when Nolan frowned, his face filled with disdain.

“She?” he scoffed. “She’s useless. Better she stays home and stops embarrassing the Soren name.”

Eli nodded in agreement. “Exactly. No school would ever want someone without a wolf.”

I clenched my fists, forcing myself to suppress the urge to let Lyra tear their mouths apart. I smiled faintly instead and took a bite of toast.

Damon suddenly spoke, “A Soren daughter with only a middle school education is an embarrassment to the family,” he said coldly. “I have some connections with Mr. Vane at Saintmere Institute. You’ll go there.”

Saintmere Institute was the worst school in the entire alliance. Most of its students were mixed–bloods looked down upon by everyone else, or people born without wolf souls. Any family with even a shred of dignity avoided sending their children there.

So this was how much my own father despised me.

I lowered my gaze and let out a quiet, humorless breath.

Damon noticed and immediately fixed me with a warning stare, his wolf eyes flashing.

“I don’t expect anything from you,” he said sharply. “Just graduate without causing trouble.”

“Nira, you should thank Dad,” Janice said smugly. “You finally get to go to school.”

My appetite was completely gone. I set my knife and fork down and stood. “My schooling isn’t your concern,” I said calmly. “I’ll handle it myself.”

Eli shot to his feet. “Saintmere isn’t good enough for you? Don’t tell me you think you can get into Howard Academy.”

I turned back and looked at him coldly. “Yes. And?”

The dining room went silent for a split second before erupting in laughter.

Nolan laughed so hard he nearly bent over. “You? Take a good look at yourself. Howard Academy is where elite heirs fight tooth and nail to get in. You didn’t even finish high school properly, and you don’t have a wolf. Saying something like that is a joke.”

Janice’s smile grew wider. “Nira, you’ve been locked away for years. You probably don’t understand how Howard Academy works. It’s the top institution in the alliance, not somewhere you just decide to attend. And their admissions cycle is already over.”

Aven, who had been silent, frowned thoughtfully. “Are you planning to go through a special evaluation track?”

Eli scoffed. “As if. Those spots aren’t something she can just ask for.”
