Nira’s POV:
I twisted the door handle hard, but it didn’t budge.

The second I realized it was locked from the outside, I knew this wasn’t some accident. Someone in the Soren family had done this on purpose, trying to stop me from getting to my entrance evaluation for Howard Academy.
I was just about to let Lyra out and smash my way through when I heard Janice’s smug on the other side.
voice
“Give it up, Nira. That door’s not going anywhere. Dad had it locked. You’re not leaving this house today.
“I mean, come on. I don’t believe for a second someone like you, who doesn’t even have a wolf, could pass Howard’s evaluation. But just in case you try something sneaky, it’s better to keep you here. Can’t have you embarrassing the family by showing up and making a scene.”
I didn’t bother responding. I let out a sharp laugh. Damon really thought a simple lock could stop me?
Pathetic.
Lyra caught Janice’s scent still hovering near the door. She’d been standing there the whole time, making sure I didn’t escape.
I turned on my heel, crossed the room to the window, and looked down. Then I opened it, called on Lyra’s strength, and jumped.
Landing was effortless. A few feet away, Reese spotted me and rushed over, eyes wide in disbelief.
“Miss Soren, what are you doing?!”
I didn’t even stop. “Jumping out the window. Isn’t it obvious?”
He stepped in front of me, arms out. “Miss Soren, I can’t let you leave. Those are alpha’s orders.”
My eyes went cold. I reached out and gave him a light push.
He crashed to the ground like a tree falling, heavy and helpless.

As he struggled, panic rose in his voice. “I… I can’t move!”

I ignored him. There was no way a regular wolf could handle Lyra’s energy. But I hadn’t actually hurt him. He’d be fine in thirty minutes. Give or take.
At the front gates, a flashy sports car was already waiting. Of course Kade would send him to pick me up. I rolled my eyes.
I climbed into the passenger seat with a stony expression.
Zane was fixing his hair in the rearview mirror like he was about to walk a red carpet. He glanced at me, whistled, and grinned. “Who pissed you off this early in the morning? Point me in their direction. I’ll handle it.”
I shot him a look, trying to keep the anger down.
“Damon had someone lock my room. He tried to keep me from taking the evaluation.”
Zane’s face twisted. “What the hell is wrong with that family? You’re his biological daughter, and he treats you like this?”
Then his tone flipped. “Okay but wait. How’d you get out?”
“I jumped out the window,” I said flatly.
Zane burst out laughing. “Damn. Respect. I like it.”
“But you don’t have your wolf, right? Shouldn’t your body be… I don’t know… more fragile? You didn’t mess up your legs or something?”
I gave him a quick glance. No explanation. He got the hint and dropped it.
Soon, we arrived at the exam site. I stepped out and headed into the building.
