Gordon hurried into the room, leaning heavily on his cane, with Edmund right behind him. Both men looked deeply emotional. The old man’s hands wouldn’t stop trembling, his were rimmed red, and he seemed barely able to keep his grip on the walking stick.

“My child… my dear granddaughter…” Gordon’s voice broke as he reached for me with unsteady hands. “All these years… you’ve been through so much…”

Hearing those words, a sudden warmth flooded my chest, and for the first time, I felt Lyra let out a pure, joyful howl inside my mind. It was as if my very blood was singing. I pulled away from Kade’s embrace and stumbled forward.

“Grandpa!” I cried, throwing my arms around the old man like a lost child who had finally come home.

Edmund moved in and wrapped us both in a powerful hug. Here was the head of the Hudson family, a man whose status rivaled any Alpha’s, a hardened warrior-and even he had tears streaming freely down his face. “You’re home now, sweetheart,” he said, his voice thick. “That’s all that matters.”

Over by the doorway, Desmond was wiping his eyes, a proud smile on his face. Then he quickly pulled out his cell phone, looking excited. “I’m calling Aunt right now! When she finds out Nira is really her daughter, she’s gonna lose her mind!”

But all that came through was a cold, automated recording. “The number you have dialed is outside the service area…”

Desmond went quiet for a long moment, then sighed and shook his head. “Can’t reach her through the mind-link either.”

“Before she left, she said she was going off-grid to focus on Uncle’s treatment,” he explained. “She’s completely unreachable right now.”

I gave him a reassuring look, trying to say it was okay without words.

Gordon patted my hand gently. “No rush, dear. When your parents get back, we’ll give them the surprise of their lives.”

Then his expression shifted, and he shot a sharp look toward Kade. “As for this young man here-we’ll have to take a real close look and see if he’s fit to be your bonded mate.”

Edmund caught on immediately. He stepped over to Kade, his posture stern and every inch the protective uncle. “Whatever you did to get Nira to agree to anything before today- consider it null and void.”

Kade didn’t get defensive. He didn’t pull rank as the Alpha King’s heir or try to throw his weight around. Instead, he met Edmund’s gaze steadily. “I never tricked her into anything. My feelings for her are real. Lyra or no Lyra, she’s still the most remarkable woman I’ve ever known, and she has all of my love.”

He didn’t waver once as he spoke-his eyes were completely sincere.

It moved me deeply. After everything we’d survived, I had never doubted how he felt. The only thing that didn’t make sense was why Lyra kept resisting him more fiercely lately.

That worry had been quietly eating at me… but for now, surrounded by my real family, I pushed the thought away.

Huddled among the Hudsons, I caught Kade flashing me a faint, crooked smirk. He’d noticed me watching.

He gave me a mock-stern glare, then shot me a look that clearly said, “A little help here?”

I quickly ducked back into Gordon’s embrace. Gordon instantly wrapped a protective arm around me and leveled a warning look at Kade. “Was he glaring at you just now? What’s next?”

“Listen to your grandpa, sweetheart,” he went on, voice softening only for me. “If this boyfriend doesn’t work out, we’ll find you someone better. I know plenty of respectable young men.”

“Damn right,” Edmund chimed in, crossing his arms. “I know loads of upstanding guys-high- ranking pack nobility, pure-blooded shifters. Not a step down from certain people.” He didn’t even try to hide the side-eye he threw Kade’s way.

Kade actually broke into a nervous sweat. “Sir, I swear to you-I’ll cherish Nira for the rest of my life. If you’re worried, I’ll sign a prenup today. Everything I own can go in her name.”

Edmund snorted. “Who needs your money? Does the Hudson family look like we’re short on cash?”

“Exactly,” Gordon agreed, though I noticed him subtly signaling the butler. “Thomas, would you fetch that indexed directory of top-tier eligible bachelors from every major pack in Meridia? It’s in my study.”

Seeing where this was going, I snuggled closer into Gordon’s side. “Grandpa, Kade really does treat me well. Let’s not trade him in just yet.”
