Chapter 397 The Proposal Under Stars
“Wh-who’s there?” Desmond stammered, hurriedly shoving a pile of proposal papers beneath the couch cushions.
“It’s me,” came Nira’s voice, sweet and clear through the door. “Where did everyone go? The house feels empty.” Natalie sprang to her feet, subtly blocking the remaining documents scattered across the coffee table. “Just a second, ho
She shot a sharp glance around the room, and immediately the others scrambled to tidy up.
Kade slipped a handful of photographs into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. Gordon coughed loudly, masking the rustle papers. Killian-ever the dramatic-even tucked a few folded planning sheets right into the waistband of his slacks.
“Okay, sweetie, come on in,” Natalie called out, cracking the door open only once she was sure the scene was clean.

Nira’s POV:
I pushed the door open and eyed everyone with suspicion. The room felt tense, like I’d walked in on something. “What’s goi in here?”
“Ahaha…” Desmond let out an awkward laugh, scratching the back of his neck. “We were just, uh… going over some new pla the family business!”
“Right!” Killian chimed in a little too quickly. “The, um… the new wellness center project!”
I narrowed my eyes. “The wellness center? Then why did I just see you stuff something under the couch?”
I started to bend down to look.
“Don’t!” Kade stepped forward smoothly, pulling me into his arms before I could peek. “Nira, actually… I’ve been meaning to a you something.”
“What is it?” I looked up at him, still suspicious.
“Well…” He hesitated, his tone softening. “Your birthday’s coming up. Lwanted to know what kind of gift you’d like.”
Natalie jumped in instantly. “Yes! That’s exactly what I wanted to ask too!”
C
tilted my head, studying each of their faces. “You ati gathered in here… just to talk about my birthday present?”
‘Of course!” Gordon rose slowly, leaning on his polished oak cane. “This is your first birthday with the family. It has to be special.
Just then, I noticed a corner of paper sticking out from under Killian’s button-down shirt. “Dad, your shirt’s kinda..
Killian suddenly clutched his stomach. “Ooh-sharp pain! Must’ve been that spicy chili at lunch. Gotta run!” And with that, he bolted from the room.
Desmond seized the opportunity. “I’d better go check on him!” He hurried out right behind.
In seconds, the study was empty except for Kade and me.

But before I could press further, ade leaned in and quieted me with a soft kiss.

Third-Person POV:
After Nira left, the rest of the Hudsons, who’d been hiding just down the hall, slipped back into the study.
“That was way too close,” Desmond exhaled, thumping a hand over his heart. “Almost blew the whole surprise.”
Natalie wiped a faint sheen of sweat from her brow. “Next time, we plan this somewhere more private. My nerves can’t take it.”
Nira’s POV:
Lately, I’d noticed everyone in the family acting… weird.
Natalie kept stepping out onto the patio to take calls. Kade was gone for hours without explanation. Even Desmond had started sneaking around like he was up to something.
“Mom,” I caught Natalie in the hallway one afternoon, “are you keeping secrets from me?”
She froze for just a heartbeat, then waved a dismissive hand. “Of course not, sweetheart! I’ve just been… making arrangements f your birthday party, that’s all.”
I figured they were probably planning some kind of birthday surprise, so I decided to play along and act like I hadn’t noticed a thing.
The following evening, as the sunset washed the clouds in shades of rose and gold, Desmond gently covered my eyes with a soft blindfold. “Come with me. I’ve got something to show you.”
When he finally removed it, I found myself standing inside a stunning glass-domed observatory.
All around me, a panoramic projection of the starry night sky stretched across the walls. Far below, through the glass floor, the twinkling lights of the entire town glimmered like scattered jewels.
“What is all this…”
Then, from somewhere in the shadows, the gentle notes of a familiar piano melody began to fill the air…
