Chapter 103 Hit Them Hard
Chapter 103 Hit Them Hard
Eloise said, “Bobby, Mom probably doesn’t want to see me either, so I’m not going to the hospital anymore. I’ve hired a caregiver to help out. When the medical bills come in, just send them to me and I’ll pay my share.” Bobby snapped, “Are you serious right now? That’s your own mother! You’re not even going to take care of her yourself, just hiring some stranger? Eloise, I guess I was wrong about you.
“I used to feel sorry for you, even felt guilty, but now I think you totally deserve it. Honestly, you’re just cold, and that’s exactly why Mom never liked you.”
Rage rushed through Eloise, and she gripped the table to steady herself.
She snapped, “Bobby, you got all her love and attention, and now you talk to me like this? Don’t you ever feel guilty?
“You know better than anyone what my childhood was like. Did you ever stand up for me? Did you ever actually care? No, you never did! Grayson was right. You’re so fake! You’re just self-righteous, always trying to guilt-trip me!”
Eloise hung up the phone after shouting.
Grayson pulled her into a hug from behind.
Eloise trembled in anger.
Memories she’d locked away crashed over her, drowning her thoughts.
The pain was so sharp that she could barely breathe.
Grayson ran his fingers gently through her hair, speaking softly to comfort her. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.” Grayson said, “You really stood your ground just now. Bobby must be losing his mind over there. From now on, that’s exactly what you should do. Don’t hold back. Hit them where it hurts!
“They always act like they’re in the right. We’ve been letting them walk all over us for too long! You can’t be too soft, Eloise. If you are, people will just keep pushing you around.
“If you ever need backup telling them off, just call me. I’m great at putting people in their place, and even better at kicking ass.”
Eloise was speechless.
Grayson always knew how to snap her out of her bad mood.
She lifted her head from his arms, “Grayson, I’ve noticed you’ve been…”
“Been what? Handsome?” Grayson grinned.
Eloise rolled her eyes. “Too talkative!”
Grayson frowned. “Does that word even apply to me?”
He always thought that word fit Joslyn, not him.
Eloise pushed him away and headed to the kitchen, and it wasn’t long before the kitchen was filled with the mouthwatering smell of food.
Grayson lingered at the kitchen door, watching Eloise with a soft smile that never left his face.
Eloise knew he was there, but she didn’t pay him any mind.
Once they’d finished breakfast, Eloise and Grayson each headed off to work in their own cars.
Camille, still in her thick pajamas, shuffled downstairs to the sandwich shop for breakfast. “Can I get a plain sandwich?”
The shop owner grabbed a plastic bag, stuffed a sandwich inside, and handed it over.
“Payment received, one dollar.”

Camille winced as the payment notification blared with an exaggerated sound effect, so loud and shrill it made her frown.
Once Camille was out of earshot, the sandwich shop couple started gossiping quietly.
The owner muttered, “That woman’s already had three! Just plain sandwiches for breakfast. She won’t even spring for a stuffed one. Must be out of cash.”
Her husband replied, “Why do you care what she eats? Maybe she’s on a diet.”
The owner snorted, “Yeah, right. As if!”
Camille was already out of earshot, so she didn’t catch a word of what the couple was saying.
Just as she was about to head upstairs, her phone rang. She answered, and a cheerful voice chimed in, “Hi, this is the Starlight Bank Credit Card Service Center.
“Based on your credit, we can offer you a personal loan. Money could be in your account as soon as today. Are you looking for some extra cash?”
Camille was about to turn them down, but then remembered her balance was barely in the double digits.
“How do I apply?” she asked.
Eloise got a message from Grayson. He had a lunch meeting with a client, so he couldn’t make it to lunch with her.
Eloise was actually pretty happy about it. She headed downstairs to the cafeteria and had some soup and rice by herself.
On her way back, Eloise checked her phone and saw Bobby had called her several times.
She noticed the calls but let them ring. She didn’t want anything messing with her appetite, so she ignored
them.
Just as she was about to put her phone down, Bobby called again.
Eloise picked up.
Bobby said, “Eloise, Mom’s tests are done, and the doctor scheduled her surgery for Wednesday at eight in the morning. You need to be there.”
Eloise replied, “I’m not a doctor. Why should I even be there?”
Bobby was momentarily at a loss for words, then said coldly, “Is that really how you’re gonna talk to me?”
Eloise replied, “Bobby, I’m just being honest here. I can’t do anything about the surgery. I’m not a doctor, and I wouldn’t be any help. Plus, Mom doesn’t even want to see me.
“I’m actually thinking about her; what if seeing me just makes things worse for her? So really, it’s better if I stay out of it.”
Bobby shot back, “Eloise, you’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you? Still holding a grudge against Mom, just leaving everything for me to handle? You’re just trying to get out of it, aren’t you?”
Bobby had been stuck at the hospital for two days, barely eating or sleeping, and he was seriously at his breaking point.
Eloise sat down on a bench by the road. “Bobby, I’m not trying to bail. Sure, I’m not there in person, but I hired someone to help out, and I’ll cover my share of the bills. Seriously, what more do you want from me?”
Before Bobby could get a word in, Eloise continued, “I remember Mom always said she didn’t need me. She was counting on you, her precious golden boy.
“She gave you all her love, and pretty much every cent the family had went to your college, your apartment, your wedding. You got it all, so don’t start preaching to me about fairness, or duty, or responsibility.
“You’re in no position to lecture me. The more you talk, the less I want to hear it.”
Bobby tried to dodge the issue, his voice dropping. “No matter what, you still have a responsibility to take care

of Mom. You can’t just bail. You’re still responsible for her support.”
Eloise smiled lightly. “I’m not dodging anything. Like I said, we’ll split the medical bills, I’ve already hired a caregiver, and down the line, I’ll pay my share of her support too.”
Bobby was speechless.
He couldn’t find anything to say, so he angrily hung up.
Eloise exhaled, feeling oddly satisfied.
To Eloise’s surprise, Grayson didn’t show up to see her after work either.
She thought maybe he’d already sneaked over to Maple Apartments on the sly.
But when she reached her floor, Grayson was nowhere to be seen.
Meanwhile, Grayson was in the kitchen, apron tied around his waist, getting a cooking lesson from Noemi.
