Chapter 96 Just Let it Go

Chapter 96 Just Let It Go

Someone who’d always treated her with such coldness was now ill.

And it was cancer.

All sorts of feelings welled up inside Eloise.

When Eloise stayed silent, Bobby explained over the phone, “It’s early stage. The doctor said surgery should take care of it.”

Eloise felt her heart relax. She picked up her water glass to take a sip, only to find it was empty.

Grayson reached for her hand and placed a full glass of water in it.

Eloise glanced at him, and Grayson gave her a small, knowing smile.

Eloise looked down, took a sip of water, and asked Bobby on the phone, “Did you get the surgery scheduled yet?”

Bobby said, “I want to take Mom to Ekloland for the operation. Can you get in touch with one of the top hospitals there? I heard the hospitals in Ekloland are supposed to be better.

“Mom’s illness can’t wait. The doctor said we should do the surgery as soon as possible. Can you try to contact the hospitals as soon as you can? I’ve already asked for time off at work. Once my leave gets approved, I’ll take Mom there right away.”

Eloise paused, then said, “Hospitals in Ucrevine are good too. I heard Ekloland’s hospitals are always crowded, and it’s tough to even get admitted.”

“Eloise, what are you trying to say? You don’t want Mom to go, is that it? Are you afraid we’ll bother you?” Bobby shot back.

“No, Bobby, that’s not what I meant. I just don’t think we need to make things so complicated,” Eloise replied.

Bobby snapped, “Save it, Eloise. I know what’s really going on in your head. You think Mom never cared about you, so now you resent her and want nothing to do with her. You’re just scared that if we show up, you’ll have to look after her and foot the bill.

“You’re unbelievable, you know that? So selfish! No matter what, Mom gave you life, made sure you were fed, sent you to school. Now she’s old and sick, and it’s your job to step up and take care of her.

“This is on both of us, and that’s not up for debate. Get in touch with the hospital. I’m bringing Mom over.”

He hung up before Eloise could say another word, the line going dead with a sharp click.

Eloise stared at her phone, her chest feeling tight and suffocated.

Grayson picked up some food and placed it on her plate.

“Let’s eat first,” he said gently.

Bobby was so worked up, Grayson could hear every word he said, his voice booming across the room. Bobby slammed his fork down on the table, anger flashing in his eyes.

Eloise was too focused on the call to notice.

Eloise ate in silence, barely tasting her food.

Grayson glanced at her and said, “If you’re not happy, you don’t have to get involved. They’ll figure out the hospital without you. It’s not like they’re going to die.”

Eloise looked up at him, her eyes starting to well up.

She quickly lowered her head, stuffing a bite of food into her mouth to cover up how she felt.

Grayson stood up, walked behind her, and gently drew her into his embrace. “If you want to cry, just let it out. You don’t have to hold it in with me.”

Eloise couldn’t hold back anymore, but all that came were a few silent tears.

She’d known since she was little that crying near and are dona

Her mom never cared if she cried, and she never tried to comfort her.

No one ever cared about her tears, so she rarely cried.

But right now, leaning against Grayson, she felt herself slipping a little.

After a moment, Eloise stepped out of his embrace, took a tissue, and wiped away her tears.

Grayson gently brushed the hair from her cheek and asked softly, “Want to eat a little more?”

Eloise shook her head. “I’m full.”

She hadn’t eaten much, but Grayson knew she didn’t really have an appetite right now.

“I’ll take you back to the office,” he said.

“Okay,” Eloise replied softly.

While Grayson went to pay the bill, Eloise waited outside.

And when he came out, he had a box in his hand.

He handed it to her. “These are the shop’s specialty pastries. Keep them with you, and have some if you get hungry later today.”

Eloise took the box. “Thanks.”

On the way back to the office, Eloise stared out the window in silence.

Bobby left her no room to say no. What else could she do?

‘Am I really supposed to just walk away?’ Eloise thought.

Grayson kept one hand on the wheel and reached over to take Eloise’s hand, his voice low and serious. “If you need help, just tell me.”

Eloise looked at him briefly, then withdrew her hand. “Thanks.”

Grayson frowned.

He hated how Eloise kept pulling away from him.

“Eloise, even if we’re just friends, you can lean on me, you know,” Grayson said softly.

“I just don’t want to lean on anyone,” Eloise muttered.

Grayson’s grip on the steering wheel tightened.

After that, the two of them fell silent again.

The car pulled up outside the Hayes Group building.

Eloise got out and spotted Beckett and Giavanna.

Giavanna watched her step out of the sports car and scoffed, “Wow, someone’s got some serious skills, huh? What did you do to have Mr. Pierce so completely wrapped around your finger?”

Eloise was already in a foul mood, and Giavanna was throwing shade, which only made her more annoyed. She had zero patience for Giavanna’s attitude. Eloise snorted, “You really want to know?”

Giavanna smirked, “I’m feeling generous. I’ll give you two minutes to spill.”

Eloise flicked her hair and gave a flirtatious smile. “Some things are just in your DNA, I guess. Maybe I’m just naturally charming. Giavanna, why don’t you go home and ask your mom If she can get you rebuilt from scratch?”

“You! How dare you mock me! Just who do you think you are?” Giavanna shot back.

“She’s mine. So, you tell me. What do you think she is?” Grayson said.

Grayson pushed open the car door, strode over to Eloise, and let his hand rest naturally on her waist.

Eloise glanced at him but didn’t pull away.

Beckett’s eyes darkened.

Giavanna instantly lost all her fire.

“Mr. Pierce, I…” Giavanna stammered.

Grayson gave her a chilling glare, and Giavanna shrank back, edging closer to Beckett in fear.

Grayson asked, “Who are you?”

Giavanna stammered, “I… I’m Giavanna Jenkins. My dad is Cannon Jenkins.”
