The sadness in his eyes was impossible to hide.
Patti clung to his arm and tried again. “Theresia has every reason to hate me. However she chooses to get back at me, I have no right to complain. I owe her that much.”
Lawrence turned to look at Patti. His eyes were clear, all logic and distance, nothing like the way he’d ever looked at Theresia.
He paused for a long moment. “Do you actually mean that?”
Lawrence was feeling guilty about Theresia these days. Patti wanted to stay on his good side, so of course she said what he wanted to hear.
She nodded, looking sincere. “I mean it, Lawrence. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make things right with Theresia.”
Lawrence pulled his arm from Patti’s grip. His voice was cold. “You really do owe her.” With that, he walked off, not looking back.
Patti stood still, jaw clenched, her gaze turning sharp.
Just wait, Theresia. This isn’t over.

Theresia was planning to head back to her hotel, but partway there, Hanson called, and she changed directions, heading for his law firm instead.
The three of them had been friends since they were kids. Everyone at the firm knew her.
When Theresia arrived, Hanson was still tied up with work, so she waited for him in the lounge. His assistant brought her a cup of coffee.
“Theresia—actually, I guess I should call you Teresa now. The usual, right? A third sugar, a third milk.”
Sally had been Hanson’s assistant since the firm first opened. Theresia liked her a lot—they’d become real friends over the years.
But nothing ever happened. He never got it, and Sally never said a word. Theresia and Helena could only watch and worry—it was pointless.
They chatted a while longer. Eventually, Hanson finished up his meeting and hurried over to the lounge.
Sally got up. “I’ll leave you guys to talk. I’ve got work to do.” She waved goodbye and closed the door behind her.
Hanson came over and sat right next to Theresia, suddenly looking serious.
“Theresia, I need to tell you something, but you have to promise me you won’t freak out.”
She couldn’t help but tease him. “Why so mysterious? Don’t tell me you have a secret kid somewhere.”
Even joking, she couldn’t get him to relax. Hanson took a deep breath, hesitated, and finally said, “Theresia, I found out that a few days ago, Patti took two samples to a DNA testing center. One of them was yours. The other one...”
