Lewis barely got the words out before pain shot through his shoulder. Lawrence grabbed him and tossed him aside like he weighed nothing. “Did you really think you had a say in this?”
With Lewis out of the picture, Lawrence sat right next to Theresia. She was backed up against the wall, and he was blocking the way out. Even if she wanted to move, she couldn’t without making a scene. Theresia frowned, but she didn’t bother complaining. If he wanted to sit there, fine. He couldn’t keep her stuck forever.
She pulled out her phone and started scrolling, pretending he didn’t even exist. Lawrence, though, was watching her intently, his mood already back under control. He let his eyes linger, studying her openly.
The whole waiting room kept sneaking glances their way. The air felt heavier, more charged, as if everyone was waiting for some drama to unfold. A couple of people were even sneaking videos, probably itching to post them online.
Theresia just kept to herself, lost in whatever was on her screen. Then, out of nowhere, Lawrence’s voice cut through the tension. “Theresia, let’s have another baby.”
He didn’t say it loudly, but everyone around them heard him clear as day.
Theresia lowered her phone, staring at him like he was a joke she’d already heard a hundred times. The idea of having another child with him was so ridiculous, she almost wanted to laugh.
She gave him a sharp, cold smile. “Lawrence, is living in your own fantasy really that entertaining? Do you even realize how ridiculous you sound? Honestly, I almost feel sorry for you.”
He didn’t care about her sarcasm. “Theresia, what will it take for you to come back to me?”
She met his gaze, her eyes cool and empty, lips pulled into a smile that didn’t touch her heart. “You could try dying.”
Lawrence couldn’t speak. It felt like the words had punched a hole right through his chest, leaving him raw and empty.
…
The Lee Group was the last team up for the pitch. Once Lawrence came out, everyone knew the results would be announced in about half an hour. The room was packed with anxious company reps, all waiting for the final word.
Even Theresia felt jittery. No matter how confident you were, there was no guarantee until the results were official.
Finally, the announcement came.
They all headed downstairs together, Lawrence sticking to Theresia’s side as if glued there. She didn’t want him so close, but he refused to give her any space.
Then her phone rang. She saw the caller’s name and answered right away.
“Teresa. Any good news?” Garry’s voice was warm and easygoing.
Theresia’s whole face lit up, her voice softer than it had been all day. “Great news. Want to come celebrate with us tonight?”
Garry didn’t hesitate. “I’d love that.”
Her expression was bright, almost glowing. “I’ll text you the address in a minute…”
She didn’t get to finish. Lawrence’s hand closed tight around hers, his grip unyielding. His face had gone dark as he spoke quietly, his voice rough. “It’s Jared, isn’t it?”
