At that, Theresia’s eyes snapped wide open, the buzz from the wine fading fast.
“Don’t be ridiculous. There’s nothing going on between us.”
Lewis hugged his bottle, tilting his head like he was really trying to figure her out. “Huh? He’s not your new fling? We all got excited for nothing. You know, we were talking about you on the ride back. Everyone had an opinion. Some people were rooting for you and Lawrence, some wanted you with the new guy, and the rest just hoped you’d stay single. Theresia, where are you going?”
She couldn’t take another second of their pointless gossip. “Bathroom,” she said, already making her escape.
She hurried out, barely stopping as she headed downstairs to settle the bill. After paying, she sent Lewis a quick message to let him know it was done and that she was heading home.
Tonight had been fun, honestly more fun than she’d had in a while. She’d definitely had more to drink than usual.
When she stepped outside, a car was parked right at the entrance. Someone came up to her as soon as she appeared.
“Teresa, Garry asked me to give you a ride home.”
Theresia rubbed her eyes, taking a second to recognize Warren.
She swayed a little, her words coming out muddled. “You’re with Garry, right?”
Warren grinned. “As long as you still remember me, that’s good enough. Come on, Teresa, let’s get you in the car.”
Since she’d found out Lawrence had lied to her for three years, Theresia didn’t really trust people anymore. But Garry was different.
She trusted him, and she couldn’t even explain why. She didn’t overthink it, just slid into the car.
Warren closed her door, got in on the driver’s side, buckled up, and turned up the heat. Garry had told him a dozen times not to let the car get too cold, since Theresia was still getting over a cold.
Warren remembered how he’d blurted something out earlier. “If you’re that worried, why don’t you just go yourself?” he’d asked Garry.
Garry had shot back, “I’m not sure I’d trust myself.”
Warren hadn’t gotten it at the time, but now he understood.
It was a message from Garry.
[Home?]
Just seeing it made her smile. She rolled onto her stomach, typing back.
[I bet Warren already told you everything.]
Garry replied right away.
[He did. I just wanted to make sure myself.]
Theresia grinned at the screen.
[Just got in, lying in bed. Thank you, Garry.]
