With nothing else on her schedule, Theresia agreed.
She drove home to change, and Farris came to pick her up. Theresia picked out a champagne-colored dress and restyled her hair to match. As she stepped out of her bedroom, Farris arrived at the door.
Naomi answered, her eyes lighting up when she saw Farris. She looked him over with the kind of expression only moms have when they think about future sons-in-law.
“And you are?”
Farris grinned, turning on the charm. “You must be Theresia’s mom. You look so young and beautiful. Naomi, right? I’m Farris, Theresia’s friend from school.”
Naomi nodded, clearly pleased. Her smile was hard to hide. “Farris, what does your family do?”
“We run a small business,” Farris replied, still smiling.
“Business is good…” Naomi started, ready to chat.
Just then, Theresia walked over and took Farris’s arm. “I’m ready. Let’s go.”
Farris said goodbye, and Theresia paused at the door, glancing back at her mom. Naomi stood there, watching them leave. When she caught Theresia looking, she smiled warmly. “Be careful on the way. Call me if you need anything.”
Theresia hesitated, then nodded. “You should go to bed early. Don’t wait up.”
Naomi’s smile grew even brighter. “Okay, I will.”
Theresia closed the door behind her. Farris was waiting by the elevator, hands in his pockets. He looked over with a teasing smile. “Your mom really does look young. And you look just like her.”
Naomi had given birth to her at nineteen and was still only in her forties now. If it weren’t for those ten years lost behind bars, she’d probably look even younger.
Theresia glanced back at the closed door, lost in thought for a moment.
“Do we really look that much alike?” she asked.
Patti gripped her pearl clutch, eyes full of jealousy. “Felton, Theresia’s here. She’s sitting in the front row.”
Felton followed her gaze and spotted Theresia. “Who’s that guy with her? They seem pretty close.”
Patti had done her homework back when she wanted to be Moses’s student, so she recognized him right away.
“That’s Farris, another of Moses’s students. His family is in the construction materials business. They’re pretty well-known in Harrisburg.”
Being “well-known” in Harrisburg meant you were already pretty successful.
Patti’s heart twisted with resentment. Why did Theresia get everything so easily? All of this should have been hers.
Fueled by jealousy, Patti slipped out her phone, angled it just right, and snapped a photo. Then she sent it to Lawrence.
