Lawrence had been running the show in Harrisburg’s tangled mess of a world for years. Trying to keep him in check was never easy.
Theresia frowned, her voice steady. “Okay. I get it.”
The case at the docks—the one with all those guns and boxes of ammo—was huge. The authorities kept everything under wraps, not wanting to stir up panic or spark rumors. No one on the outside knew what was really happening.
Meanwhile, Theresia filed a report as a victim. She asked the police to reopen the investigation into her car accident from three years ago, digging up the truth behind the crash and the cover-up in the hospital.
She brought two key witnesses back to Harrisburg with her. They told the police everything they knew. When the officers checked the facts, the stories lined up. The evidence against Lawrence and Patti was solid. The police had no choice but to arrest them.
On the day Patti was taken in, Theresia waited downstairs.
After Eric signed those papers handing over his assets, Leila finally realized he’d been guarding himself against her for a long time. Without her noticing, he’d moved all their shared property out of reach. Now, with The Baker Group in ruins, Leila was left with nothing. Even her only home had been taken over by Mamie.
The three of them—Leila, Eric, and their child—had no choice but to rent a tiny apartment after leaving the hospital.
Theresia stood beneath a tree, listening to the breeze whisper through the green leaves. She stared ahead, patient, until finally, after ten minutes, the person she was waiting for appeared.
Patti spotted her at the same time.
She glared at Theresia, her eyes sharp with rage and bitterness.
Theresia, on the other hand, looked calm. There was a quiet confidence in her smile, the kind that said she’d already won.
Leila rushed outside, her cries echoing across the street. “Why are you arresting my daughter? What right do you have? Let her go!”
One of the officers stepped in her way, his tone stern. “Obstructing the police is a crime. Are you sure you want to keep going?”
Leila froze, startled, before Felton hurried over and pulled her back.
Before she’d found out the truth about her blindness, she’d never even thought about fighting back. Even when they bullied her, even when Patti set her up again and again, Theresia always saw them as her family.
But her kindness had just made them worse. The more she let things go, the more they hurt her.
Everyone knew Patti had stolen her corneas. Theresia was the only one left in the dark, treated like some kind of fool.
She was a living, breathing person. She had feelings, and she could hurt just like anyone else.
The last bit of warmth faded from Theresia’s eyes. She stared down at Leila, her voice cold. “This is what happens when you make your own bed. You chose this, so now you have to deal with it.”
Felton helped Leila up, his face twisted with anger. “You’ll get what’s coming to you, Theresia.”
Theresia just smiled. “Watching you all finally pay for what you did—that’s enough for me.”
