He Gave Her My Eyes A Story of Final Sight novel Chapter 22

Theresia sat up, her eyes cold and clear. “Lawrence, you’re reading too much into this. I’m not lucky enough for my child to change my status.”

Lawrence stared at her, completely at a loss. They’d been fine for three years. Ever since she got pregnant, though, she’d changed. He couldn’t say exactly how, but it was obvious she wasn’t the same.

Was she thinking about divorce? He shot that idea down right away. Three years together had taught him one thing for sure: Theresia loved him. She loved him so much she’d never leave. And now she was pregnant with his baby. How could she have any other plans?

She must still be mad about the other day, when he lost control and hit her. This had to be her way of sulking.

Lawrence glanced at her stomach, remembering Daniel’s warning. He tried to sound more gentle.

He walked over and tried to smooth things over. “I was wrong, okay? I never should have hit you, no matter what. But you can’t keep going after Patti. Theresia, I know you don’t like her. You think she stole the Bakers’ love from you, that she stole Jared. But she’s their real daughter. If Jared picked Patti, it just means he didn’t love you enough. None of this is Patti’s fault.”

Theresia almost laughed. How had she never realized Lawrence could lie so easily, look her right in the eye and twist the truth?

His words cut deep, leaving her feeling numb. If this was how things were going to be, then nobody was getting off easy.

She kept her eyes forward. “I don’t hold a grudge against Patti. But my feelings for Jared were real. Do you have any idea how much I loved him, Lawrence? Ever since he saved me when I was eight, I was in love with him. If not for that car accident three years ago, we’d never have been separated.”

Lawrence didn’t love her, that was true. But hearing his wife talk about loving another man still stung.

Now that she knew what kind of man he really was, the thought of letting him touch her was unbearable.

Theresia went pale, her whole body recoiling. “Lawrence, I don’t want to.”

He frowned deeper, bracing his hands on the arms of her chair and leaning in, his presence almost overwhelming. “You’re still mad at me, huh?”

He slid his arm around her waist and easily lifted her into his arms. “Theresia, don’t turn me away. Trust me, I know what I’m doing. I’d never hurt our baby…”
