Theresia held out her hand for Frank to see. “She’s got some serious nerve. Look, my hand’s actually red.”
Frank leaned in, inspecting her hand with exaggerated concern. “Oh no, this is bad. If Moses finds out, I’ll be in so much trouble. You’re his only female student, you know. Your hands are practically priceless.”
Patti stared at Theresia, her shock quickly turning into jealousy.
So this was the student Moses took in three months ago.
It was her.
This woman was the reason she’d been pushed aside.
Who was she, really? What was her story?
Everyone in the art world knew Moses had accepted a new student with incredible talent, someone he absolutely adored. But no one had ever seen her face in public. Her background was a complete mystery.
Patti let out a cold laugh. “So it was you who had Moses embarrass me three months ago.”
Theresia barely glanced at her, a look of pure disdain in her eyes. She didn’t bother to reply. “Frank, don’t you think the air in here suddenly feels polluted?”
Frank understood right away. He called over security. “Get them out. And if anyone lets them back in, they’re done here.”
Leila tried to put up a fight, but Patti grabbed her arm, never taking her eyes off Theresia. “Mom, we’ll have our chance. Let’s just leave for now.”
They were forced out, still fuming. Even after they got into the car, Patti’s brow was knit tight with frustration.
Leila complained for a while, then noticed Patti was completely lost in thought. “Patti, what’s going on in your head? Did they make you so mad you can’t even speak?”
Patti was quiet for a long time. “Mom, I feel like I know that woman from somewhere. But who is she?”
Leila hesitated, thinking it over. “You know, she did seem familiar. I’ll have someone dig into her background as soon as we get home. We’ll find out who she is. But Patti, you need to hurry. The only reason Jared hasn’t divorced you yet is because he thinks you’re pregnant. If he finds out you lied, he won’t let it go.”
Frank laughed. “That’s what I like about you. No nonsense. So, when will you have time to paint another one for the gallery? I want to make it our star attraction.”
Theresia glanced out the window as a red sports car disappeared down the street, then turned back to him. “No problem, but I have to go back to Harrisburg for a bit. Let’s talk when I get back.”
Frank took her empty cup. “That’s fine, as long as you agree. By the way, there have been a lot of fakes of your work popping up lately. People are paying good money for them.”
Theresia shrugged. “Those forgeries only fool the amateurs.”
That Sunday night, Theresia and Farris arrived in Harrisburg.
Hanson was already waiting outside the airport. The moment he saw Theresia, he hurried over and gave her a huge, warm hug.
He finally let go, smiling through misty eyes. “Theresia, welcome home.”
