They kept up their banter all the way upstairs. As soon as the elevator doors slid open, Farris grabbed Theresia’s hand and tucked it into the curve of his arm.
She shot him a look. “Really? You think this is necessary?”
Farris put on his most serious face. “We have to sell it. My mom’s got detective skills that put Sherlock Holmes to shame.”
Theresia grinned. “Hard to believe, considering you didn’t inherit a shred of that talent. Maybe I’ll suggest she try for another kid. Might get lucky next time.”
It took Farris a second to catch her joke, then he gave her a look of fake outrage. “Just wait. I’ll get you back for that one, Theresia.”
They were still laughing as they walked into the private dining room. Not far away, a man stood watching them leave, his eyes narrowed and cold.
Warren glanced at Garry’s stormy face and felt sweat trickle down his forehead. “Garry, the guy with Theresia is Farris. He’s just a classmate, nothing more.”
Garry didn’t say a word, but something dark flickered in his eyes.
Warren had worked for Garry long enough to know what he was thinking. “I’ll find out what Theresia came to The Grand Metropole for,” he said quickly.
Inside the room, Theresia had already taken her seat while Farris was busy playing up her introduction.
Marietta had assumed Farris dragged along some random girl just to appease her, but the moment she saw Theresia, her whole face lit up.
She couldn’t hide her happiness. “Theresia, I really like you. I never dared hope my son would bring home someone so perfect. Honestly, I always thought Farris had no direction, but it turns out he’s got great taste.”
Her way of talking was so familiar. The same tone as Farris, really.
Theresia didn’t want to mess this up for Farris, so she put on her best graceful-lady act. “You’re wonderful too, Marietta. So warm and easy to talk to, nothing like the other wealthy ladies who are so hard to get along with. I like you a lot. The minute I saw you, it felt like we’d known each other for ages. Even without Farris, I think we’d be great friends.”
Was Garry here to settle some old score?
But Garry didn’t even look at her. He walked right over to Marietta. “My assistant said he saw you here, so I thought I’d stop by to say hello. I hope I’m not interrupting, Marietta.”
Marietta switched gears instantly, putting on her polished business smile. With a nod, she said, “Of course not, Garry. You’re always welcome.”
After that, Garry turned sharply.
His eyes locked on Theresia, deep and unreadable.
Theresia tensed, her brow furrowing as she tried to steady her breath.
