He Gave Her My Eyes A Story of Final Sight novel Chapter 57

What did she owe him, really? Just for carrying her to the car? Theresia frowned, irritation written all over her face.

Garry lifted an eyebrow. “Teresa, as a friend, you really shouldn’t turn me down.”

Friend? As if. She didn’t even bother arguing, though. Crossing him never ended well. Sometimes it was smarter to just go along with things, so she got behind the wheel and started driving.

Garry spent the whole ride glued to his phone, probably busy with work. Theresia didn’t care. Her mind was all over the place and she wasn’t really paying attention to him or the road.

She’d been living here for three years, but it was the first time she actually noticed the scenery outside her window. The trees along the road were trimmed perfectly, and she realized they must be close to Verdant Heights.

Everyone in Harrisburg knew Verdant Heights. It was the most luxurious mansion in town. Lawrence had bought the land himself, hired the best designers, built everything from scratch. Theresia only found out later from Leila that Patti had picked the name. Back then, she’d just assumed it was because Patti and Lawrence had grown up together in the same orphanage, super close since they were kids. She never thought much of it until three months ago, when she finally understood. Everything about that place screamed Lawrence’s devotion to Patti.

The tulips in the garden, the stables out back, the private pool... Looking back, it was all so obvious. Lawrence had done it all for Patti.

How had she not seen it before? Theresia hated herself for being so naive. If she hadn’t put all her hopes in one man, she wouldn’t be in this mess now.

Once was enough. She’d never make that mistake again. The only person she could depend on was herself.

Lost in her thoughts, Theresia didn’t notice she’d missed a turn until the car was racing toward the median. Her heart jumped. She jerked the wheel, the back of the car skidding dangerously, almost lifting off the ground.

Her body pitched forward, her forehead about to smash into the steering wheel. Suddenly, a hot, steady hand caught her, cushioning the blow. The pain she braced for never hit. The car screeched to a stop and Theresia felt dizzy and lightheaded.

No wonder people called it the best house in Harrisburg. But standing there, Theresia knew it wasn’t built for her. It was for Patti, the woman who meant everything to Lawrence. Patti loved anything vintage, so Lawrence built Verdant Heights that way. Patti wore old-fashioned dresses, so Lawrence made Theresia dress like her too.

What a joke.

Looking at the place now, Theresia actually laughed, a small, cold sound. She was almost glad she’d overheard the truth at the hospital three months back. If she hadn’t, how much longer would she have gone on fooling herself?

Her eyes grew clearer, sharper, even a little cold.

Suddenly, the sound of construction trucks rumbled from both sides of the house. Theresia turned her head, distracted by the noise.
