Bulldozers and excavators showed up one after another, at least five or six of them rumbling across the lot. Theresia stared, stunned, until the excavator’s arm crashed against the side of the building. Only then did it all click.
She glanced over her shoulder at Garry.
He stood there with his hands in his pockets, calm and composed, his face totally unreadable. Theresia had never known anyone as hard to figure out as him.
“Do you have something against Lawrence?” she asked.
Garry didn’t even flinch. He watched the building start to collapse, his voice steady. “Something like that.”
She frowned, trying to read him. “That’s not really an answer. It’s either yes or no. Which is it?”
He turned to look at her, and for just a split second, she thought she saw something intense flicker in his eyes.
“Lawrence hurt someone who means a lot to me,” Garry said quietly. “So yeah, I guess that makes him my enemy.”
Theresia looked away, her thoughts spinning. She’d never met Garry before, so whoever he meant, it wasn’t her. Still, the enemy of her enemy might just be a friend. Maybe they even wanted the same thing. Who knew, maybe someday they could team up.
Just as she was getting lost in thought, Garry spoke up. “So, Teresa, what are you scheming?”
She looked up, pretending not to know what he meant. “What? Nothing at all. Garry, let’s do this properly. I’m Theresia. I’m a painter.”
He almost smiled. “I know.”
So he’d looked into her. Whatever, she had nothing to hide.
Within an hour, her post was blowing up.
“#FamousPainterTheresia will be at The Muse’s Atelier for the art exhibition on the 26th.”
Patti’s name was trending too, and excitement about the exhibition kept building. People in the art world were already making plans to stop by.
Looking at her post, Theresia grinned. This was exactly what she wanted. Patti in the spotlight, with everyone watching. The higher you climb, the harder you fall.
For the first time ever, Theresia actually looked forward to an exhibition.
Before she knew it, the day of Patti’s solo show had arrived.
